Liverpool are expected to mount a credible challenge for the title

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League last term and suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League final last May. The Reds have enjoyed a summer of serious investment, signing goalkeeper Alisson, and midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho to strenghten their weakest positions. Jurgen Klopp's charges won seven (including a 5-0 over Napoli, 3-1 over Torino, 4-1 over Man UTD, 2-1 over Man City), drew one and lost one – to Borussia Dortmund – in their nine warm-up matches this summer. They ended the Premier League season unbeaten at Anfield last year and beat the Hammers 4-1 and 4-0 at home and away.

Jurgen Klopp has a number of concerns in defence as both Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren are likely to miss out through injury. As a result, Joe Gomez should partner Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson out wide. In midfield, Fabinho (illness) and James Milner  will be monitored while Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum are expected to start. The likes of Sadio Manè, Roberto Fimino and Mo Salah will form the front trio, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge likely to feature in the 2nd half.

West Ham have improved their squad massively under new manager boss Manuel Pellegrini

West Ham have appointed a former Premier League-winning manager, Manuel Pellegrini, and were the most active team in the summer transfer window and brought in at least 10 players. Although their pre-season results were solid, the opposition was never top-notch. The highlights results were a 3-1  the success over Aston Villa (3-1) and Ipswich Town (2-1). They also beat ANgers (0-1) and Wycombe (0-1), drew against Mainz (1-1) and Preston (2-2) and suffered a 3-2 defeat against Winterthur in their first seasonal outing.

Winston Reid, Manuel Lanzini and Andy Carroll are the only players who Manuel Pellegrini will definitely be without for the trip to Anfield. Fabian Balbuena may edge out Issa Diop to play alongside Angelo Ogbonna as centre back, while while Ryan Fredericks and Aaron Cresswell could get the nod over Pablo Zabaleta and Arthur Masuaku as full backs. Marko Arnautovic is expecte to lead the attack once again with new signings Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko on his flanks. Carlos Sanchez and Lucas Perez joined West Ham on deadline day but neither are expected to be fit enough to feature here.
