Iceland v Croatia betting preview
There is still a chance that Iceland could make it through to the knockout stagesAfter making such an impressive start to their first ever World Cup by holding Argentina to a draw, Iceland suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Nigeria. They have now gone eight games without a victory. Te Icelanders need a victory here and rely on a positive result from the other game between Nigeria and Argentina in order to progress. Are the Super Eagles to beat Messi & co. in St. Petersburg, Iceland’s potential upset against Croatia would count for little.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has only one injury concern as Johann Berg Gudmundsson is out with a calf problem. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is likely to return on bench after he came on for Emil Halfredsson in the starting line-up last time out. Rurik Gislason and Burnley's Gudmundsson are in contention for a place in defense. No other changes are expected in the starting XI.
Croatia want to maintain their momentum going into the Round of 16Croatia are all but guaranteed top spot in the group, providing that they do not lose, Nigeria do not win and make up the five goals on goal difference. After easing past Nigeria 2-0 in the opener, they smashed heavyweights Argentina 3-0 to book a place von the knockout phase. A draw here would mathematically secure the top-spot finish and likable clash with Australia or Denmark in the last 16 round. Croatia and Iceland battled each other during the qualifying campaign which saw the Scandinavian outfit surprisingly finish top of the standings ahead of the Blazers. The teams both recorded a clean sheet win apiece in front of the home crowd in the process.
Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić is set to ring the changes. Mateo Kovacic, Marko Pjaca, Andrej Kramaric, and Milan Badelj could all come in, with Ivan Rakitic, Ante Rebic, Sime Vrsaljko, and Mario Mandzukic all carrying bookings and likely to make room. Kramaric will be used as lone forward, since Nikola Kalinic has been sent home from the World Cup by Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic after the AC Milan forward refused to come on as a second-half substitute during the 2-0 win over Nigeria.
