How The Tour de France Works

Of course, to play the Tour de France betting markets, you need an understanding of how it works.

The Tour de France is a 21 Stage race based across three weeks and competed by 22 teams of eight riders.

The aim of the race is to complete all 21 stages in the shortest cumulative time. The stages all vary in style, with around nine flat stages, three hill stages, seven mountain stages and two time trials.

Throughout them all various points will be up for grabs for sprinters and hill climbers. These are all competed for, with different jerseys available to the riders who have collected the most points across the race.

The Yellow Jersey is of course the most famous jersey available and is awarded to the race leader at the end of every stage. The rider wearing the jersey after Stage 21 is crowned the Tour de France winner.

The Tour is a very tactical race and it will be generally a given that one rider leads each team as the GC rider, with the rest acting as support to that rider, protecting him from crashes and working around him to conserve energy and lead into breakaways from the peloton (the main group of riders).

Tour de France Classifications Explained

As mentioned, there are a number of different jerseys available to win. These are all representative of the classifications within the Tour de France.

You can bet on the winner of all the jerseys in the Tour de France betting market. Below you’ll find descriptions of what each jersey signifies.

Yellow Jersey

The Yellow Jersey is the most famous of the Tour jerseys and is as iconic as the Green Jacket in golf.

The Yellow Jersey is worn by the race leader, and is handed out to the leader of the General Classification at the end of each stage.

The jersey can change hands numerous times throughout the race but it’s the person handed it after Stage 21 that is crowned the winner of the Tour de France.

Polka Dot Jersey

The Polka Dot Jersey is certainly the most dashing of the Tour de France jerseys and is awarded at the end of every stage to the rider with the most hill climb points.

Like the Yellow Jersey, it’s given to the rider with the most accumulated points across the whole race, with the person holding it following the final stage being crowned the champion.

Climbs across the Tour have varying degrees of difficulty and the number of points given are reflective of that. Points are awarded to the first 10 riders to reach a summit, with a staggered scoring system, first earning the most points and 10th the least.

Green Jersey

The Green Jersey is one of the most exciting jerseys to win as it’s given to the rider who has collected the most sprint points.

There are various points throughout the Tour, both at predetermined points through stages and at the end of them, which hand out sprint points. As with the Polka Dot Jersey, points are handed out to the first 15 riders who cross the sprint finish line first, with the Green Jersey being handed to the rider with the most accumulated points at the end of every stage.

The rider with the most points at the end of the final stage (with the final sprint on the last day competed for down the Champs Elysees) handed the Green Jersey as the winner.

White Jersey

The White Jersey is handed out in exactly the same way as the Yellow Jersey but is for young riders to compete for. This means that the leader of the race at the end of every stage under the age of 26 is awarded the White Jersey.

The rider wearing it after 21 stages is the winner of the Young Rider Classification.
