The bookies are of course going with the usual suspects, but there are some interesting choices that are well worth a punt…
Most bookmakers are offering four each-way places in their top scorer markets, meaning there is value on offer for some of those considered outsiders. Furthermore, with VAR in play at Euro 2020, any selection on spot kick duty will represent decent value.
EURO 2020 GOLDEN BOOT TOP CONTENDERS
The following are our top choices for the Euro 2020 Top Goalscorer market. We believe that they have a high chance of scoring plenty of goals in the Euro 2020, and one of them might get the “Euro 2021 Top Scorer” title.
Romelu Lukaku is of a prolific campaign with Serie A champions Inter - contributing 23 goals to their Serie A title win.- and is Belgium all-time leading goalscorer. Belgium have been draw in Group B with Denmark, Finland and Russia, so he will not face the toughest of the backlines. The Red Devils put 6 past the Danes in the Nations League, and Lukaku scored two goals. As to Euro 2020 qualifiers, he scored 7 goals and averaged an impressive 1.56 goals per 90 minutes.
Harry Kane is England's main attacking threat. The Tottenham striker has enjoyed a stellar season for club and country. He is the Three Lions' penalty taker and will surely start all the matches. He topped the scoring charts in qualifying with 12 goals from his 22 shots, boasting an impressive 55% goal conversion rate. Group D is not the easiest one but England will play at home and can surely break Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic (who recently conceded 4 goals away to Italy). Harry Kane is still to break the duck at the Euros - he failed to score in 4 games so far. At World Cups, however, he has 6 appearances and 6 goals. Will it be the year of the "HurryKane"?
Kylian Mbappe wasn’t a senior international at the previous Euros but he was key in helping them over the line at the World Cup, netting four times. He has been outscored by Olivier Giroud in qualifying and will play in the Group of Death alongside Hungary, Germany and Portugal. Another concern if backing Kylian Mbappe, is his lack of goals for France, as the PSG striker has only bagged 6 goals in 14 games since 2019. Anyway, his deadly focus, speed, power, and instinct, combined with his youth and the fact that he is surrounded by the best players in the world is more than a reason for him topping the list.
Robert Lewandowski has enjoyed a record-breaking season with Bayern Munich, netting 48 games across 40 matches in all competitions for his club. Poland have been drawn in Group E alongside Spain, Sweden and Slovakia, so he is likely to have at least four games to try and score as many as possible. Anyway Sweden and Slovakia are solid at the back - the latter have conceded just 8 goals in their last 11 competitive fixtures. He has scored just once in both Euro 2021 and Euro 2016, but we expect the Polish striker to improve his attacking return.
Even at the age of 36 and surely not in his prime, Cristiano Ronaldo can't be overlooked. He scored 36 goals in 44 games for Juventus this season, with 29 coming in the tough Serie A. Since the start of 2019, he has 17 goals in as many games. Of course, the former Real Madrid star will be the penalty and set-pieces taker. They are in a tough group which contains France and Germany but if Portugal manage to escape the Group of Death, Cristiano Ronaldo will be a serious contender for the Golden Boot title.
EURO 2020 TOP GOALSCORER LONG SHOTS
Here are a list of players that can upset the odds and win the Golden Boot title this summer...
Ciro Immobile is an interesting prospect considering that Italy are no longer the defensively-minded team of the past. The Lazio forward won last year's Golden Boot scoring for fun with Lazio and is expected to get the nod over Andrea Belotti for the central striker berth. The Azzurri will clash with Switzerland, Turkey and Wales in Group A and it's likely Roberto Mancini's men can average more than two goals per game.
Memphis Depay enjoyed another successful season for Lyon. The Dutchman scored 20 Ligue 1 goals in 37 games for Lyon. Netherlands have been drawn alongside favourable opposition in Group C and Depay is expected to shine in Group Stage. Anyway, the Oranje are likely to have a tough opponent at L16 level and Memphis Depay was outscored by Liverpool midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum during qualifying.
Antoine Griezmann will be hoping to pick up the Golden Boot award for the second consecutive European Championship. France have been drawn in the "Group of death", the Group F that also include Germany, Portugal and Hungary. The Barcelona striker did not have the most profilific season of his career as he only managed to net 19 goals across all competitions. But "le Petit Diable" has a great record for his country, he is the penalty taker and is likely to flank Kylian Mbappè for Les Blues.
Turkey's Burak Yilmaz is a big priced outsider. Turkey have scored 10 goals in their last three outings - against Netherlands (4-2), Norway (3-0) and Latvia (3-3). They have been drawn alongside Italy, Switzerland and Wales in the Group A, three team known to be rock sold at the back. The Turkish striker has scored 15 goals in 26 appearances for Lille this season and a hat-trick against Netherlands few months ago. Hence, the 50/1 odds for Burak Yilmaz are a value bet.
Ilkay Gundogan (66/1 with 888sport) could be the dark horse in the Golden Boot race. His campaign concluded with 17 goals across all competitions, a massive improvement given that the netted only 22 in 164 games for the club before this season. VAR being in use at the tournament should lead to more spot-kicks being awarded and Gundogan is expected to be germany's penalty taker. Based on his fantastic year thus far, the Man City midfielder can continue his fine form in front of goal.
Alvaro Morata (35/1 with Unibet), Timo Werner and Karim Benzema are not the most prolific strikers in the tournament and are not even sure to be regular starters for Spain, Germany and France respectively.
