Costa Rica v Serbia betting preview
Costa Rica are unlikely to repeat their achievement of four years agoCosta Rica managed to qualify with relative ease, having secured second place behind Mexico in the CONCACAF group, and will be looking to build on their quarter-final appearance in Brazil four years ago. They go into their first game of the 2018 World Cup on the back of a very inconsistent run of form. They have lost six of their last eight outings now, including very poor defeats to Panama, Hungary, and Tunisia. Their final International Friendly before the World Cup debut saw them thrashed at the hands of Belgium, following on from an uninspiring 2-0 defeat to England.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas will again be between the posts for Los Ticos. The team will be captained by former Fulham star Bryan Ruiz, who will support Marco Urena in attack. Joel Campbell, Christian Bolanos and Johan Venegas are competing for two spots in midfield, alongside Deportivo midfielder Celso Borges. The five man backline will be formed by Gamboa and Oviedo as right and left back respectively, Duarte, Acosta and Gonzalez as centre backs.
Serbia are a good bet to be the dark horses in Russia this summerIn their qualifying campaign, Serbia finished top of a group featuring the Republic of Ireland and Wales but that was enough to save manager Slavoljub Muslin from being sacked. They collected 19 points and leapfrogged Wales at the last fence. Serbia are on a similarly unconvincing run recently as they too look to find some form of consistency going into the tournament. Slavoljub Muslin's men were impressive in their last World Cup warm up fixture, securing a 5-1 win against Bolivia, but prior to that they lost 1-0 to Chile, beat Nigeria 2-0, and lost to Morocco 2-1.
Nemanja Matic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will provide Serbian steel in midfield, while Filip Kostic, Dusan Tadic and Adem Ljaijc will be charged with providing the spark in attack where Aleksandar Mitrovic will play as lone striker. In defense, it's unclear whether Branislav Ivanovic will start at right-back or centre-back. Nikola Milenkovic and Aleksandar Kolarov, anyway, look both sure starters.
