- Written by David Bet

The feature on day three is the Stayers Hurdle (formerly known as World Hurdle) which is a Grade 1 open to runner aged 4yo+ and is run over three miles in which the runners will be faced with twelve hurdles. Gordon Elliott's Teahupoo won the 2024 Stayers' Hurdle renewal at odds of 5/4, justifying one of the biggest favouritism of last year's Festival. STAYERS HURDLE BETTING PREVIEW
The Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle, the leading long distance hurdle event in the national calendar, is the highlight of the third day of racing at the Cheltenham Festival. Formerly known as the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, this contest is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle run over three miles, for horses aged four years and upwards, with twelve hurdles that must be cleared and a £325,000 prize purse on offer. The weight allowance is eleven stone for four-year-olds and eleven stone ten pounds for five-year-olds and upwards.
There is an allowance of seven pounds for both mares and fillies. This year's renewal looks a very open event and many top class horses will fancy their chances of Festival glory.
And now we take a closer look at this year's Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
Who will win the Stayers' Hurdle 2025?
TEAHUPOO will defend his crown, having landed a victory in the 2024 renewal of the race by nearly four lengths. He also recorded a six and a half length success at Punchestown a month later. This season, the eight-year-old has only run once and finished nearly four lengths behind Lossiemouth in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. The longer trip at Cheltenham of course will suit him better.
HOME BY THE LEE secured a six-length success at Leopardstown over the festive period, scoring in the Savills Hurdle over nearly three miles, with Bob Olinger six lengths behind him. The Joseph O’Brien-trained runner has been beaten in this race for the past three seasons with his best finishing place 3rd last year.
Gordon Elliott's THE WALLPARK is the odds-on favorite. He won a qualifier at Cheltenham in October and has since finished fourth in the Grade One Long Walk Hurdle, proving that he is a very thorough stayer. His new owner JP McManus has also entered him in the Pertemps Final Handicap where he would carry top-weight off his mark of 152.
LUCKY PLACE has won three of his seven starts and is unbeaten on his last two starts, having showed up well in the Coral Cup last season. He won the Howden Ascot Hurdle over two miles, three and a half furlongs, and followed it up with success in the Relkeel at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. His lack of course and distance experience at Cheltenham could be a significant concern.
LANGER DAN, winner of the Coral Cup in the last two editions of the Cheltenham Festival, can't be ignored. Dan Skelton's star was unlucky not to have beaten Impaire Et Passe when second to that rival in the Aintree Hurdle. He comes alive in the spring and his style of running lends itself to long-distance races.
MYSTICAL POWER lost his unbeaten record when 2nd beaten only 1½ lengths in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last season but resumed that progress when winning Grade 1 contests at both Aintree and Punchestown after. This season he disappointed on his two starts so farat Grade 1 level over 2 miles.
Dark horses?
GOWEL ROAD is a Cheltenham specialist. He finished 2nd on his first four starts this season, all at Prestbury Park. He was impressive when beating Monmiral by 2 ¼ lengths in the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle last time over this course and distance.
BOB OLINGER has a great Cheltenham record, winning the Baring Bingham and the Turners (Golden Miller) in March before landing last year’s Relkeel. Overall, he is 3-3 at Prestbury Park. This distance is acceptable for him, and he can reverse recent form with Home By The Lee. He is not the force he was, but he could be revitalised by revisiting this track.
Lightly-raced ROCKY'S DIAMOND was a 22/1 winner of his maiden hurdle at Limerick last April, before announcing himself at Grade One level when finishing third to Home By The Lee at odds of 66/1 in the Savills Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. He proved that was no fluke when landing the Grade Two Galmoy Hurdle in January.
NEMEAN LION won the Kingwell over two miles and he has won three races this season over two and a half while Fergal O'Brien's CRAMBO will also lead the home charge, having defended his Long Walk Hurdle crown at Ascot before Christmas.
Veteran GA LAW, BUDDY ONE and FRANCISCAN ROCK are other long shots with Top 3 credentials.

Ruby Walsh's Stayers' Hurdle Tips
"The price of Teahupoo for the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is more about the lack of competition in that division than what Gordon Elliott’s runner is doing on the track. I think he is the dominant stayer in the division and he’s the one you’d definitely want to be on.I don’t know whether there’s one ‘lurking’ in the field, but there’s two definitely at a big enough price that interest me. Going back hurdling would definitely rejuvenate Buddy One. I’m not saying he’s good enough to win the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle – but he could run into a place."
