PERTEMPS FINAL HANDICAP BETTING PREVIEW
The Pertemps Final Hurdle is a handicap race and is run on the Thursday of the Cheltenham Festival after being served by several trial races throughout the National Hunt season. It's a Grade 3 handicap hurdle over nearly three miles, for horsers aged five years old and upwards. Many outsiders have claimed glory in the race in the past.
The Pertemps Final Handicap has produced several big priced winners in recent years with the average SP of around 20/1 since the year 2000, so clearly this is a bookmaker friendly handicap (where stakes are best kept to a minimum).
And now we take a closer look at this year's Pertemps Final Handicap and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.Who will win the Pertemps Final Handicap 2022?
WINTER FOG is an unexposed performer has been kept fresh for this valuable prize since finishing second at Leopardstown in December. There should be plenty more improvement in the tank for this Emmet Mullins' charge after just five runs over hurdles so far.
SIRE DU BERLAIS, runner up in the Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle last year and winner of the Pertemps Network Final in 2019 and 2020, was soundly beaten by Sizing John in that January Pertemps Final qualifier. He was also pulled up in Grade One company at Leopardstown over Christmas.
Gordon Elliott's DUNBOYNE won at Thurles last year and chased home smart sorts Bob Olinger and Capodanno in previous runs. He finished fifth in the Leopardstown qualifier in December although he was hampered by a loose horse in the final stages. His subsequent outing at Leopardstown in February was below par due to a bad mistake but the feeling is that he has a much bigger effort in him at some stage.
FOLCANO has made one previous trip to Cheltenham in his career when he was brought down at the first hurdle in the Martin Pipe last year. This season he finished sixth in a Pertemps Qualifier at Punchestown before running a big race in fourth at Navan in a handicap in December. He wasn't seen since then.
ALAPHILIPPE was last seen in mid-January, heavily beaten at Warwick. It was probably a preparation race for this classy horse as his previous run was the Albert Bartlett (Grade 1) at last year’s Festival when he finished fifth. Prior to that, he won the Prestige Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock
Elliott has also entered TULLYBEG, who has won two of his last three outings, and he put in a decent shift for a fifth-place finish at Cheltenham in October. He hasn’t been seen since then but has proven form from fresh. He could run in the Coral Cup as well.
Other Gordon Elliott's interesting entries are SASSY YET CLASSY, MARS HARPER and DALLAS DES PICTONS.
Dark horses?
THE BIG GALLOPER posted a career best in winning a Musselburgh qualifier by two-and-a-half lengths from a couple of in-form rivals. He has run once at Cheltenham and he stayed on well enough into second over that 2m5f trip.BORN PATRIOT recoreded a super second place in the October qualifier despite a few things went against him on the day.
COEUR SEREIN ended his novice hurdles campaign with three spring handicap wins. On his reappearance, Jonjo O’Neill’s eight-year-old found himself outpaced when finished 4thin the Grade Two Persian War Novices’ Hurdle. He finished just eight lengths adrift of Corach Rambler over 25-furlongs at Cheltenham’s International Meeting, before coming home well to finish second in another novices’ handicap chase at Exeter in early January. He switched back to hurdles Exeter in February, finishing second to the in-form Emmpressive Lady,
KANSAS CITY CHIEF is a veteran hurdler especially in comparison to some of those entered and has had a great pathway into the Cheltenham Festival with four runs at the track, placing twice and winning the other two. Since changing hands to Neil Mulholland’s yard he has seemingly found his stride over hurdles, with his form for new trainer reading 13122.
REMASTERED, THE JAM MAN, DAME DE COMPAGNIE, IF THE CAP FITS, and MILL GREEN also deserve a mention.
At the moment, the most backed horses are the following:
