The Arkle Novices' Chase is the champion two mile chase for novices. A race for the speedsters, with many former top hurdlers taking this route. The Arkle provides a total of twelve fences for the competitors to tackle which can be a tough ask for these novice chasers as the contest is generally run at a quick pace. Last year Alan King's dwardstone justified 5/2 favouritism scoring an impressive 4 lenghts victory. Who will win this year? ARKLE CHASE BETTING PREVIEW
Known as the Champion Chase for novices, the Arkle Trophy is one of the main races on day one of the Cheltenham Festival, boasting a prize fund of £130,000. This race has been won in the past by the likes of Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop, Sizing Europe and Sprinter Sacre, all of whom went on to land the Champion Chase at subsequent Festivals. Edwardstone cruised to a 4 lengths victory in 2022 for trainer Adam King and jockey Tom Cannon, becomingonly the third eight-year-old to win the Arkle Chase in the last 30 years.
As with all other races on Day 1, the Arkle Novices' Chase is run left-handed on the Old Course at Cheltenham. It is open to novice chasers and is for five-year-olds and upwards.
And now we take a closer look at this year's Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
Who will win the Arkle Chase 2023?
JONBON had sat happily atop the Arkle betting for the entirety of the season but his price drifted further following a workmanlike victory over Calico in the Kingmaker at Warwick. Prior to that, he jumped beautifully on both of his first two starts over fences, thrashing Monmiral at Warwick before an easy Grade One triumph over Boothill at Sandown.
EL FABIOLO is now the ante-post favorite following a runaway victory at the Dublin Racing Festival as he thrashed Appreciate It and Dysart Dynamo in the Irish Arkle.
APPRECIATE IT and DYSART DYNAMO both chased home stablemate El Fabiolo in the Irish Arkle and both could still take him on again at the Festival. The former has Cheltenham form having scored in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle in 2021 and finishing 6th in the Champion Hurdle last year. The latter fell on his only previous visit to Cheltenham, when going well in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last year.
BANBRIDGE stayed on to finish second in the Irish Arkle, but he looks set for a step up in trip at Cheltenham.
SIR GERHARD has an entry here but we expect him to run elsewhere.
SAINT ROI was 25/1 since few weeks ago. He's now around 10/1 with the best horse racing sites in the UK, as he has been heavily backed in recent weeks.
Other probable contenders are FINAL ORDERS, HOLLOW GAMES and FIL DOR.
STRAW FAN JACK and MORTLACH could bolster the British contingent, but neither would have a hope of challenging the leading contenders.
At the moment, the most backed horses are the following:
