The feature on day three is the Stayers Hurdle (formerly known as World Hurdle) which is a Grade 1 open to runner aged 4yo+ and is run over three miles in which the runners will be faced with twelve hurdles. The Emma Lavelle’s eight-year-old Paisley Park strode clear up the Cheltenham hill to land this race last year. The Sunbets Stayers' Hurdle, the leading long distance hurdle event in the national calendar, is the highlight of the third day of racing at the Cheltenham Festival. Formerly known as the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, this contest is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle run over three miles, for horses aged four years and upwards, with twelve hurdles that must be cleared and a £325,000 prize purse on offer. The weight allowance is eleven stone for four-year-olds and eleven stone ten pounds for five-year-olds and upwards.

There is an allowance of seven pounds for both mares and fillies. This year's renewal looks a very open event and many top class horses will fancy their chances of Festival glory.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Stayers' Hurdle and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

PAISLEY PARK, the 2019 Stayers Hurdle champion, is now 8 from 11 over hurdles and is unbeaten since the start of last season. Emma Lavelle's eight-year-old comes to the 2020 Festival with two comfortable trial wins under his belt.

BENIE DES DIEUX has only tasted defeat once since joining Mullins from France over three years ago and it came in the Mares' Hurdle last season, when she was well in command but came down at the last.  She has been at her brilliant best in her two starts over three miles, winning a Grade 1 in France when beating the French superstar hurdler De Bon Coeur, and winning the Galmoy Hurdle last time out.

SUMMERVILLE BOY finished runner-up to Paisley Park in the Cleeve Hurdle on Trials Day at this track on his first start over three miles. He won his first chasing race in good style but then came down next time out at Sandown and was put back over hurdles.

PENHILL missed last season and hasn't shown the same form in four outings this season, though he was more like his old self when runner-up in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan earlier in February, showig he still has plenty of ability

EMITOM has been lightly campaigned and is limited on experience, plus finishing last to Summerville Boy in a field of six in January does not especially breed confidence. His first run since resulted in an eight-length win in the Unibet Rendlehsam Hurdle at Haydock.

CITY ISLAND failed to shine over fences in two runs this term, and trainer Martin Brassil has elected to send him down this route. He is yet to run over a trip this far in his career but the Ballymore win at last year’s Cheltenham Festival suggests that the extra three furlongs should pose no problem.

Dark horses?

RONALD PUMP is reportedly on target for this staying championship after blowing out over fences behind Carefully Selected in a Grade Three novice chase at Naas.

TOBEFAIR earned a second-place finish in the Pertempts Handicap Final last season at the Cheltenham Festival. Recently, he ran a mighty race to finish fourth in the Cleeve Hurdle behind Paisley Park.

APPLE'S JADE has admittedly been shorn of her very best form this season despite winning a Grade 1 at Leopardstown over three miles over Christmas, beating Unowhatimeanharry by 17 lengths. She was no match for Benie Des Dieux next time out, being pulled up on what was very testing ground at Gowran Park.

LISNAGAR OSCAR came back to form when third in the Cleeve Hurdle at the trials meeting

BACARDYS ended a losing run in Navan Grade 2 in November. He will have his third crack at this race - he fell when likely to have been placed in 2018 and not seen to best effect last year. Willie Mullin's charge was well beaten when fourth of 7 on his latest outing in a Grade 1 hurdle race at Leopardstown over 3 miles back in December.
