NATIONAL HUNT CHASE BETTING PREVIEWThe National Hunt Chase is a huge test for both horses and jockeys and a very tough race to win. It's a Grade 2 National Hunt chase, run over four miles, for novice chasers aged five and older. There are 24 fences to be jumped, so this contest is a true test of stamina and jumping skills. Le Breuil rallied bravely up the hill to see off Discorama by half a length, but the race was marred by controversy as only four of the 18 runners completed, with nine falling or unseating and five being pulled up. As a result, the race has been shortened by a quarter of a mile.
And now we'll take a closer look at this year's National Hunt Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
CAREFULLY SELECTED registered a wide-margin win in a Grade 3 at Punchestown to establish himself at the top of the market. He is unbeaten after three starts over fences in Ireland, revelling in soft ground and landing hefty market support in Grade 3 company twice in January.
Gordon Elliott's RAVENHILL was busy in the summer and has been given a break since falling at Navan in November. He's still got plenty of miles left on the clock and could improve over this trip.
LORD DU MESNIL has racked up a hat-trick of staying handicap victories and has risen up the weight by 32-pounds since the start of the season. Following a first win over fences at Newcastle, he landed a Haydock double in just nine days over Christmas. He won the Tommy Whittle Chase just before the festive break. Then he was even more impressive when landing The Last Fling Chase over course and distance.
SPRINGFIELD FOX was a brilliant winner at Chepstow earlier this season. He also won on his latest outing in a chase when 7-4 favourite at Exeter over 3m on February, beating Ocean Cove by 17 lenghts. As a result, he extended his winning sequence over the larger obstacles to 5 (including points)
FORZA MILAN has placed second in two good quality staying chases, including a close second behind Carefully Selected at Navan.
NEWTIDE has won both his starts over fences so far at three miles, looking tapped for pace each time but finding plenty for pressure to get on top in the closing stages last time at Wetherby.
Dark horses?SMOKING GUN oblted up under JJ Slevin to beat Early Doors in a 25-furlong contest at Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival. He was then backed into favouritism for the Thyestes Handicap Chase, but just managed to finish 9th.
OCEAN COVE is an useful hurdler who looks all about stamina. He finished runner-up at Exeter over 3 miles last month, beaten 17 lenghts by Springfield Fox on heavy ground. With a soft to good, he cold revert that result.
LAMANVER PIPPIN is a small-field novice winner over hurdles who confirmed chase debut promise with a comfortable success at Chepstow in November over 2.3 miles, beating Fortescue by 5 lenghts . He has been kept fresh since then and could be the surprise package of this year's renewal.
The likes of REDZOR, ANTEROS, CLONDAW CIAN and SOME CAN DANCE all look well beaten in this company.
