Marsh Novices Chase Betting Tips, Predictions, Preview & Free Bets (Cheltenham 2020 - DAY 3)

  • Written by David Bet
The Marsh Novices' Chase is the newest race at the Cheltenham Festival, added in 2011 and run over two and a half miles. The reason for the addition was to have a middle distance for the novice chasers. Last year the race was won by Defi Du Seuil who defeated Lostintranslation by two and a quarter lengths. Find below our Cheltenham 2020 Marsh Novices race preview, with odds, tips, predictions, trends, free bets and betting promotions.

The Marsh Novice Chase was a brand new edition to the Cheltenham Festival in 2011 and has been dominated by Willie Mullins in the last three seasons as the Irish trainers has guided Vautour (2015), Black Hercules (2016) and Yorkhill (2017) to victory. Although young, the Marsh Novices' Chase has quickly become an important part of the Cheltenham Festival and we expect to continue to see that over the coming years. It's a Grade 1 chase run over two miles and four furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards, with a prize money of £150,000.

The race will attract plenty of top-class horses as it falls between the 2 mile Arkle Challenge trip and the 3 mile RSA Chase distance.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Marsh Novices' Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

ITCHY FEET ran a blinder at Cheltenham last year, finishing third behind Klassical Dream in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. He opened his chasing account at Leicester in a weak race and won the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase on just his second start over fences, even if his jumping wasn’t the most fluid.

MISTER FISHER beat Al Dancer in his last outing, a second victory for the Seven Barrows inmate. His jumping technique has improved with every start but he is more ground dependant than most has he needs decent ground. In that case, the Nicky Henderson trained horse could be a decent each-way option.

Willie Mullins’ decided to send FAUGHEEN chasing as an 11yo. His debut race was a relatively low-key affair at Punchestown, ended with a 7-length victory. On Boxing Day, "the Machine" then took his first Grade 1 over fences, beating the talented Samcro. Last time out, Faugheen contnued his unbeaten chasing form at the Dublin Festival.

SAMCRO was arguably unlucky not to win the Drinmore when he fell at the second-last. He had his bubble burst by Faugheen in an eagerly-anticipated clash at Limerick on Boxing Day so it would not be surprising to see the Gordon Elliott star reverting to hurdles.

MELON is a two-time Champion Hurdle runner-up who has made promising-enough start over fences, second to Fakir d'Oudairies at Navan before scoring at Leopardstown. Anyway, he finished 20 lenghts behind Notebook when fourth of 6 on his latest outing in a Grade 1 chase at Leopardstown over 2m 1f last month.

BAPAUME left chasing debut run behind when easily winning by 19 lenghts a novice contest at Naas in December but he has since run no sort of race in Grade 1 Irish Arkle at Leopardstown, finish last of 6 runners a month ago.

RESERVE TANK sealed back-to-back Grade Ones at Aintree and Punchestown. This year Colin Tizzard's charge  managed to win the Rising Stars at Wincanton, but was beaten by Jarvey’s Plate on debut at Chepstow. In his last outing, he didn't jump well at all when second in the John Francombe.

Jonjo O'Neill's trained mare ANNIE MC has already landed a handicap plot when taking the EBF Final at Newbury last March, she was only rated 127 going into that race and bolted up by 8 lengths. Since going chasing she has been superbly placed to win three small field races (Mares' only).

TORNADO FLYER is a former Champion Bumper winner. He was recently discovered to have a respiratory infection after his penultimate run and performed well when third to Faugheen last time out.

MIDNIGHT SHADOW has already won here at Cheltenham when beating Paint The Dream in the Dipper Chase. He has a couple of pounds to find on the book but could be an interesting long-shot option.
