The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup is the Cheltenham Festival’s showcase of amateur riding talent in the UK. It's a handicap chase run over three miles and one and a half furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards. A severe test with a big field often going off far too hard, and it can pay to focus in on a proven stayer who is likely to be dropped out in rear during the early stages.

Ridden by amateurs, horses who feature prominently here can go on to run in future Grand Nationals. For instance, 2010 winner Ballabriggs won the Grand National the following season.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Kim Muir Challenge Cup and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

Nicky Henderson's CHAMPAGNE PLATINUM should not be overlooked despite finishind third, beaten 18 ½ lengths, to Itchy Feet in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown (2m 4f) few weeks ago. He has won a point so should handle the step up in trip.

LE BREUIL, winner of the National Hunt Chase last year, has shown very little in three runs this winter but he’s had just one start over conventional fences this term at Warwick. Ben Pauling's charge has boat loads of stamina and is a good ride for an amateur with Jamie Codd having rode him when 7th in the Becher Chase back in December. Lat time out he finished 5th at Warwick in the Classic Chase.

DEISE ABA comes here on the back of two recent victories and has improved no end this season since being switched to the bigger obstacles. The 7-year-old created a deep impression when winning at Sandown in February, ridden with confidence from rear by Tom O’Brien.
KILFILUM CROSS was very close to win at the Festival last year. Henry Oliver's charge was given a wind operation in December after starting the season in disappointing fashion. On his comeback he has finished a distant 4th at Wetherby. On his most recent outing, instead, he improved greatly in first time cheekpieces to finish runner-up at Kempton.

PLAN OF ATTACK had a good season with wins at Wexford and Aintree before putting in a cracking effort at Leopardstown over Christmas when third of 27 in the Paddy Power off a mark of 135, behind Roaring Bull and Fitzhenry.

MILAN NATIVE has some promising form in the book; fifth to Fakir D’Oudairies at Navan in November and runner-up to the highly progressive looking Allaho at Fairyhouse in January. When last seen, he was again runner-up behind Spyglass Hill at Gowran Park.

FITZHENRY had a pretty good start to the season with three places in late 2019, which included a second to Chris’s Dream at Navan. He followed that run up with a second to Roaring Bull at Leopardstown. His last run was a 13th place finish in Ireland, he was cruising through the race but was badly hampered by a faller.

Dark horses?

THE YOUNG MASTER is a previous course winner who ended last season in top form but, having had a spin on the Flat, he did not offer any encouragement at Wincanton on his seasonal return. Anyway, he is hard to dismiss despite pulling up last time.

BOB MAHLER bypassed the Cheltenham Festival last year but managed to win races both at Newbury and at the Cheltenham April meeting. The Warren Greatrex's charge came good last time out at Musselburgh where he won over 4 miles.

CLOTH CAP has experience of a big-field scenario as he finished third in last year's Scottish Grand National. He was beaten by a neck by My Old Gold when second of 4 on his latest outing in a chase at Doncaster in December last year. He could definetely mount a challenge.

MILITARIAN sprang a surprise when scoring at 50/1 in a handicap over 3 miles at Ascot but has found revised marks beyond him since. He finished 14 lenghts behind Cepage when fifth of 10 at 12-1 on his latest outing and has had a wind operation since last run. As a result, he could be a potential improver.

GO ANOTHER ONE won two consecutive races over fences at Worcester and Clonmel in September before a pair of underwhelming efforts in slightly better company. On his latest outing, back in October, he finished 3rd behind Slate House.
