The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the highlight of the four days of the Festival, with the best chasers in the UK and Ireland taking on each other in the most anticipated race of the year. It's a Grade 1 chase covering three miles and about two and half furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards. The Gold Cup runners have twenty-two jumps to face before a gruelling climb up the Cheltenham hill.

A strong pace usually means this becomes a war of attrition up the hill, and stamina rather than speed is the essential requirement. Defending champion Native is sure to be back to defend his title and will be tough to beat.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

SANTINI was third of 20 in the 2018 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle and went down by just half a length in last year's RSA Chase. This season, Nicky Henderson's stable star ran well below expectations despite winning at Sandown Park but, following a breathing operation, was much more convincing when staying on strongly to beat last year’s Gold Cup third, Bristol de Mai, in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham’s trials meeting.

AL BOUM PHOTO powered up the hill to give legendary Irish handler Mullins a first triumph in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year. He has recorded a smooth success at Tramore on New Year's Day (as he did 12 months ago) and has been kept fresh for the big day

DELTA WORK won the 2018 Pertemps Hurdle final and was a staying-on third in last year's RSA Chase. He claimed Grade 1 victories at Leopardstown in the Savills Chase in December and the Irish Gold Cup in February, beating Kemboy and Presenting Percy in the process.

LOSTINTRANSLATION was runner up to Defi Du Seuil in last year's JLT Novices' Chase. This year, Colin Tizzard's charge blotted his copybook when pulled up in the King George at Kempton. Previously, he put in a superb round of jumping to score at Carlisle and beat Bristol De Mai in the Betfair Chase.

CLAN DES OBEAUX failed to handle this tougher test of stamina when fifth in last year's renewal of this very race. This winter, he landed a second straight King George success by 21 lengths from high-class stablemate Cyrname.

KEMBOY parted company with his pilot at the first fence when landing awkwardly in 2019 Gold Cup but was dominant in the following spring festivals, also beating Al Boum Photo in the Punchestown Gold Cup. He hasn’t looked anything like the horse he was last spring and seems to have regressed in the jumping department, showing a tendency to go out to his right. He finished 4th behind an improved Delta Work in the Savills Chase at Christmas without a prep race.

PRESENTING PERCY landed the 2017 Pertemps and an ultra-impressive RSA triumph two seasons ago. He was made favourite for this race last season but trailed 33 lengths behind the winner after suffering all sorts of problems during the race. So far this season he has finished 3rd at Punchestown in the John Durkan Memorial Chase and then was only 5th in the Savills Chase.

Dark horses?

BRISTOL DE MAI finished third in last year's race. His last appearance came at Cheltenham in the Cotswold Chase when he had to settle for second place behind Santini in gruelling conditions. Better ground will only improve him although he remains stronger on flatter tracks. The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained horse is winless after five previous outings at Cheltenham, but has been placed on four occasions, including when third in last year’s Gold Cup.

MONALEE beat Al Boum Photo in a Grade One novice chase at Leopardstown but was only fourth in the Ryanair Chase last season behind Frodon. He has finished second in the Savills Chase for the last two seasons but would probably need good ground to show his best.

CHRIS'S DREAM could be a real contender if conditions become particularly testing. He has won the Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan in November with plenty to spare, and the Red Mills Chase at Gowran last month. Both victories came on heavy ground.

REAL STEEL had something to prove after disappointing in the Red Mills Chase won by Chris's Dream at Gowran last time. He has improved since with a smooth victory at Thurles where he slammed Footpad by 14 lengths.
