  • Written by Simon Bettarini
The Cross Country Chase is the first major cross country chase of the Cheltenham Festival. The race challenges entries to cover a distance of 3 miles 7 furlongs and it is run over a special man made course which involves ditches, banks, rails and even a Grand National type fence. The 2019 race was won for a second year running by Tiger Roll for trainer Gordon Elliott. This article contains our 2020 Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase race preview, with free predictions, free bets, no deposit bonuses, odds, recent trends and special promotions.

The Glenfarcas Cross Country Handicap Chase is really popular race amongst punters since being introduced to the Cheltenham Festival in 2005. It is a great spectacle, very different to the other races at the festival. The contest is a Cross Country chase covering three miles and seven furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards, with a prize purse of £65,000. The race is a stamina test for the horses and also a mental test, with many different types of fences to jump.

This is also a test for jockeys, who have to be aware and know the route they have to take.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

TIGER ROLL seems to be improving year to year, with 12 wins from 34 runs under Rules and a fantastic 2019 season as he destroyed his opponents in the Cross Country here and then bolted up in the Grand National at Aintree. He returned to the track later than previous years after suffering a slight injury setback to run a respectable fifth at Navan.

EASYSLAND has won his last seven completed starts, including at Pau last month. Furthermore, he looked an absolute natural at the discipline when winning the race run at Cheltenham’s December meeting. At six years old, he is open to loads of improvement mainly against rivals who’s best days may be behind them.

URGENT DE GREGAINE hasn’t finished outside the first three in five runs at Cheltenham. Although comfortably put in his place in last year’s event by Tiger Roll (beaten 23 lengths), he was a much-improved second during the Open Meeting in November.

MIGHT BITE is a formerly high-class but apparently regressive horse . Nicky Henderson hasn't been able to turn him around and this looks a desperate attempt to revitalise a horse who is clearly falling out of love with the game since pushing Native River to the pin of his collar in the Gold Cup here two years ago..

YANWORTH was a top-class hurdler, a winner in fact of the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle in 2017. However he doesn’t appear to be the horse he once was although the JP McManus owned horse won a small race as odds-on favourite last time out.

NEVERUSHACON has shown plenty of ability in three starts in this sphere so far, getting off the mark at the third attempt at Punchestown in February. He beat Grade 2-winning chaser in Yanworth amongst others.

DIESEL D'ALLIER has plenty of experience of Cross Country races in France and was second last time out at Pau on Christmas Day.

Dark horses?

JOSIES ORDER was second in this race last season but has been a beaten favourite at Punchestown twice since.
CHIC NAME has made the frame on a few visits to Cheltenham on the Cross Country track. He recently finished second to Bob Mahler in the Edinburgh National. Stamina remains a concern.

SUMKINDOFKING was 3rd  behind Chic Name at Musselburgh last time out, and he too could go well here, though he would likely need the ground to come up soft if he iss to feature on his first try over these fences.

The likes of KINGSWELL THEATRE, OUT SAM, PLEASANT COMPANY, OUTLANDER and ARLEQUINE D'ALLIER are other horses that could upset the odds.
