CHAMPION BUMPER BETTING PREVIEWThe Weatherbys Champion Bumper concludes the second day of racing at the Cheltenham Festival. It's a Grade 1 National Hunt flat race run over two miles and half a furlong, for horses aged four to six. Because this is a flat race, also know as a 'bumper', it rather obviously doesn’t feature any jumps. A great contest to watch for future reference, with unexposed horses from UK and Ireland clashing for the first time for this prestigious prize.
This race always produces a crop of exciting hurdlers for next season and has been dominated by the Irish trainers, and particularly Willie Mullins, down the years. With big prices available for a lot of horses because with so little form on offer, online bookmakers and punters often find it hard to pick out a favourite.
And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Champion Bumper and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
APPRECIATE IT is the red hot favorite to win this year having been slashed from 16/1 after his last race. He rocked up at the Dublin Festival in February and turned a Grade 2 contest over the minimum trip into a precession. Prior to that, the Willie Mullins-trained was a promising third on debut at Fairyhouse in November.
FERNY HOLLOW has been an expensive failure in both runs so far under Rules for Willie Mullins, sent off 8/11f and 8/13f but bumping into a useful rival on each occasion.
PANIC ATTACK, who has recently joined David Pipe, won his sole start for Willie Mullins at Market Rasen. Being a four year old and a mare she will carry just 10st 3lb here.
QUEENS BROOK bolted up in a large-field event in extreme conditions on her debut at Gowran in February. She will also receive a sex allowance from the favourite.
ISRAEL CHAMP failed to set the heather alight on debut at Worcester over two miles last October but returned a better horse, winning second time out at Cheltenham in November 2019.
ESKYLANE beat Appreciate It on their respective debuts at Fairyhouse when they finished 2nd and 3rd behind Assemble. He was very impressive when landing the odds at Navan on his bumper debut. Eskylane bolted up that day and beat a Willie Mullins horse by 8 ½ lengths in the process.
OCEAN WIND has course form at Cheltenham and landed a significant gamble in what is traditionally one of the stronger pre-Festival bumpers at Newbury on Betfair Hurdle day.
Dark horses?DARLING DAUGHTER was a shock 25-1 winner of the Grade Two mares’ bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival and should be taken into account.
THE GLANCING QUEEN lined up at Cheltenham after an 82-day break and ran a fine 16-1 fifth to Envoi Allen before taking the Grade 2 mares’ bumper at Aintree. He could well improve on last year’s fifth place.
FORGED IN FIRE beat by half a length Ferny Hollow at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting and should be also in the mix.
ASK A HONEY BEE has now won three times this season. After beating Wilde About Oscar at Southwell he went on to win at Haydock by an impressive 11 lengths and at the beginning of February landed the hat-trick at Wetherby.
ADRIMEL is now unbeaten in three starts if we include his point-to-point outing. He dramatically shortened in the betting after scoring at Doncaster on February last time out beating The Edgar Wallace by 1 1/4 lenghts. ADRIMEL is unbeaten so far. Previously he won at Uttoxeter on his seasonal debut . It's hard to say where his limit lies but he could be the suprise package.
THIRD TIME LUCKI is another exciting runner for trainer Dan Skelton. He recorded an impressive win at Market Rasen earlier this season and also scored on his latest outing in a NH flat race at Huntingdon over 2m in January, beating Bothwell Bridge by 4 lenghts.
FIVE BAR BRIAN was 25 months after his encouraging debut. On his latest outing, he opened his account in good style for new yard in the mud at Fairyhouse over 2 miles in January, beating Harry Alonzo by 1 1/4 lenghts.
DARLING DAUGHTER and GOOD TIME JONNY also deserve a mention as long-shot options.
