AB NOVICES HURDLE BETTING PREVIEWOne of three Grade 1 contests on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival is the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. It's a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race, run over a distance of about three miles, for horses aged four years and upwards. This makes the race the starting platform for many young horses, who go on to have great racing careers at a high level.
Despite being one of the newest races at the festival this event has already provided us with high class winners, thrilling finishes and more. The AB Novices' Hurdle is where we will see future Gold Cup and future Stayers Hurdle horses.
And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
THYME HILL emerged comfortably best of the British-trained runners when third to Envoi Allen in last year’s Champion Bumper. He is a progressive five-year-old who is yett finish outside of the top three places in his first five starts. He won the Ballymore Novices Hurdle here on 16th November and is unbeaten in his 3 starts this season, including the Betway Challow Novices Hurdle and the Unibet Persian War Novices' Hurdle.
MONKFISH has started favourite for all four of his starts under Rules. He finished runner-up to Longhouse Poet in a bumer and Diol Ker on his hurdling debut. Willie Mullins' charge has shown marked improvement the last twice, notably when winning a novice at Thurles by 20 lengths last time.
LATEST EXHIBITION took the scalp of the hotly-fancied Andy Dufresne (who has won since) in the Navan Novices' Hurdle in December. He built on that performance in good style at the Dublin Racing Festival too, outstaying Cobbler's Way and Longhouse Poet in the Nathaniel Lacy & Partners.
HARRY SENIOR got beat a length and a half by Sporting John first time out but won a little race on Welsh National day and a good Ballymore trial at Cheltenham in January with both King Roland and Protektorat behind him. He is tailor-made for a test like the Albert Bartlett.
FURY ROAD has won all three of his starts since switched to hurdles. He took another step up the ladder as he defied a penalty and completed a hat-trick at Limerick last time out. His two easy wins to date having come over 2 miles 6 furlongs and 2½ miles
RAMSES DE TAILLEE, last year’s Welsh Grand National runner-up, has made the most of his novice status over hurdles this season. He recorded an impressive win over The Butcher Said at Cheltenham, before outstaying his rivals in the River Don.
Dark horses?SEMPO was really impressive when he got off the mark over hurdles last time out in a huge field in Ireland. He was second to the 145 rated Cobblers Way, who subsequently finished second in a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing festival and saw off the Mullins pair of Francin and The Big Getaway, both of whom have won since.
KILTEALY BRIGGS has won two novice hurdles on heavy ground this term, the first by 36 lengths. Jamie Snowden’s charge has been beaten twice by Redford Road though, and laboured to a half-length victory on his last start when he was an almost unbackable favorite.
REDFORD ROAD has secured a win on two of his first three starts in novice hurdles, and both races have produced several winners. Notably, he beat Champagne Well by half-a-length in the Bristol Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in December. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge then struggled under the weight of a penalty over a trip too short for his abilities.
JANIDIL has taken off over hurdles since joining this stable and had a bit up his sleeve when winning a Fairyhouse handicap off 135 before Christmas. That day he beat Buildmeupbuttercup by over 2 lenghts.
COBBLER'S WAY is a bumper winner who was off the mark over hurdles at Leopardstown in December. He improved further when only denied by Latest Exhibition by 2 lenghts in Grade 1 company at the same venue last time.
LIEUTENANT ROCCO is a point winner who has bolted up on both starts in novice hurdles, again looking a resolute galloper when forging clear at Warwick few weeks ago, beating Stick With Bill by 9l. Previously, he also landed at Chepstow.
