Tour De France Stage 17 Betting Preview

The stage begins gently in Muret with about 115km of gradually rising roads as the race heads southwest towards the mountains.

But after the intermediate sprint in Luchon, there are three cateogrized summits. The consecutive ascents of the Peyresourde (13.2 kilometres at 7%), Val Louron-Azet (7.4 kilometres at 8.3%) and Col du Portet (16 kilometres at 8.7%) are identical to the stage won by Nairo Quintana in 2018.This part of the race goes either up or down, so there is hardly time for a breather.

The Col du Portet, which rises to 2,215 meters, is arguably the hardest climb in the Pyrénées with many km over 10%.

With only one more mountain test in the Pyrenees to follow and and Individual Time Trial, time is running out for anyone to attempt to produce something special in the hope of dislodging Pogacar.

Since it Bastille Day, the French national holiday, we expect French riders to run super-aggressively.

Stage 17 Favourites

Tadej Pogacar, of course, is the number one favourite for the stage win. He would be more than happy to allow a breakaway going to the finish line since his team is not strong enough to control the race. We believe that many other teams will keep things tight, so Pogaçar could be force to attack in first person on the final ascent.

Jumbo-Visma's Jonas Vingegaard has been the only rider who dropped Pogacar until now - on the second ascent of Mont Ventoux on stage 11. Probably, the team will come up with a cunning plan to isolate the Yellow Jersey. Then, it will be a head-to-head between him and the race leader.

The likes of Rigoberto Uran, Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz look the only GC contenders able to follow Vingegaard and Pogaçar.

Enric Mas had a bad day on Mont Ventoux but he has three-week pedigree and we expect him to improve in these two days on the mountains.

Richard Carapaz and Rigoberto Uran have strong mountains teams and they are expected to send one or two team-mates in the breakaway. We don't think it will be enough to drop Pogaçar but at least it will makes the race more interesting.

Wilco Kelderman, Alexey Lutsenko and Ben O'Connor will aim to maintain their berth in the top 10 of the General Classification. They will run in conservative mode and we don't expect them to win the stage.

Can a breakaway rider win this stage too?

Although the breakaway have dominated the mountain stages so far, we think this could be the first chance for the GC group to reach the finish first.

Anyway, everthing can happen so we recommend to keep an eye on possible breakaway riders such as Nairo Quintana, Tadej Mohoric, Sergio Higuita, Michael Woods, Wout Poels, Miguel Angel Lopez, Emmanuel Buchmann, Ion Izaguirre, Dylan Teuns, Ruben Guerreiro, Bauke Mollema and Sepp Kuss.

French riders with "bad intentions"? We mention Valentin Madouas, Pierre Rolland, Kenny Elissonde, Julian Alaphilippe and Aurelien Paret Peintre.

As to David Gaudu, he is close to the top 10 after yesterday's breakaway and he will be not allowed to escape on Wednesday.
