TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 2 BETTING PREVIEWThe first stage saw Alexander Kristoff winning ahead of Mads Pedersen (Trek Segafredo) and Cees Bol (Sunweb) after a chaotic stage that was overshadowed by a run of crashes and bad weather.
Stage 2 will serve as an early wake-up call for many riders as the peloton heads into the heart of the Maritime Alps and the riders will tackle two mountains and two more punchy climbs before the finish in Nice.
The two category 1 mountains are the Col de la Colmiane at the 63.5km mark and Col de Turini at 99.5 kilometres. In the final quarter of the stage, there is The Col d’Eze, a punchy haul out of the eastern end of Nice. Then the peloton will loop back and ride up again the first half of the climb before turning off at the bonus sprint at Col des Quatre Chemins with 9km to go. This short and punchy offers the perfect opportunity for attacks.
Stage 2 Top ContendersSergio Higuita and Julian Alaphilippe seem like the most likely to shine in such a stage. Anyway, the Frenchman crushed on Saturday and his conditions should be assessed.
If Wout Van Aert manages to stay in the group with the fast climbers, his sprinting skills should be enough to win the stage and wear the yellow jersey (if he’s not charged with protecting his team’s GC contenders).
The same could be said for Peter Sagan, who looked brilliant in Stage 1 and managed to finish fifth in the final sprint.
Other possible contenders are Movistar's Alejandro Valverde and Lotto-Soudal’s Philippe Gilbert while the likes of Miguel Ángel López and Thibaut Pinot both crashed heavily on Stage 1 and will probably look to minimize the damages rather than attack..
Should the GC Contenders go for the stage win, Primoz Roglic looks the most suited for this kind of stage while last year's winner Egan Bernal and his fellow countryman Nairo Quintana are expected to run in conservative mode.
