A win for Serena Williams would see her pull level with the great Steffi Graf, who finished her career with 22 major singles titles. After posting two easy victories, losing only five of the 29 games, Serena had to outlast No. 26-seed Kristina Mladenovic with a 12-10 second-set tiebreaker. In the quarter finals, she lost the opening set to Yulia Putintseva and was dangerously close to losing the second one but then Serena regained their rhythm and cruised to victory. In the semi-finals thhe world's number one defeated one of the stars of this year’s tournament, Kiki Bertens in a tight two setter, 7-6(7) 6-4.

Garbin Muguruza looks in impressive form and defeated Sam Stosur in style on Friday, winning 6-2, 6-4. Anyway, her campaign this year began in shaky fashion, dropping a set (and her only set!) to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round. Since then, the number four seed has rolled through the draw without dropping a set. Muguruza's competition has not been too stiff, since her best win was over No. 13 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Williams and Muguruza have met on four occasions and the American has three victories. Muguruza got the upper hand when these two last came together at Roland Garros, winning 6-2, 6-2 in 2014.

Serena Williams, who is attempting to become the first woman since Justine Henin to successfully defend her Roland Garros title, is undefeated in three previous French Open finals, of which two were in straight sets: the opponent on these occasions were Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova in 2002 and 2013 respectively.
