RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 FINAL : NEW ZEALAND vs FRANCE - MATCH PREVIEW- New Zealand advanced into the final on the back of a commanding 20-6 win over Australia. Ma’a Nonu, who scored the only try of the match, had suffered a neck strain, reserve scrum-half Andy Ellis and wing Cory Jane both sustaining knocks to their noses, while first-choice No.9 Piri Weepu was battling a virus.
- There was no surprise that the All Blacks bullied the Australians upfront, suffocating their backs of quality possessions. But we can expect more resistance from the French forwards than what the Wallabies offered.
- The French have shown the ability to win a variety of different games throughout the World Cup. In the past two weeks alone, the French have shown explosiveness and athleticism, when they beat England 19 to 12, and they also proved they can grind it out, and win ugly if need be, when they beat Wales 9 to 8.
- France have come in for much criticism after they became the first team to reach a Rugby World Cup final having lost two matches. The French barely beat a 14-man Wales 9-8 in the first semifinal, after being thrashed 37-17 by New Zealand in the pool stage, and losing to Tonga.
- French pack are significantly superior to the Wallabies and we don’t see the All Blacks getting quick ball for 80 minutes. They have a scrum that has the ability to disrupt and they showed against Wales that they will compete for opposition line out ball. France can compete and perhaps even edge the battle up front, if they can do so then you just never know.
- New Zealand has won the past three clashes against France scoring 37 and 39 points in the last two meetings between the teams. Their most recent clash was last month in the group stages of this tournament when the All Blacks scored a 20 point victory. France have put New Zealand out of the past two World Cups when they have met in the knockout stages. The French have nothing to lose and this is the worst possible opponent for the Blacks.
- France have failed to cover one handicap when priced as favourites in this years RWC but have covered both handicaps when underdogs. All Blacks have covered 4/6 handicaps when priced as favourites. Teams from same group have only met in the final once in history, in 2007 when SA beat England 15-6, the pool match read 36-0 to the Boks. (So don't read too much into the 37-17 New Zealand win in the Pool Stages).
- The better the weather conditions the less chance France has so Les Blues are hoping for a rain storm of note to hit Auckland on Sunday. Rain is a leveler and in really wet conditions the French kicking game could get the upper hand.
