The PDC World Darts Championship 2012 sponsored by Ladbrokes will begin on the 15th December and running until 2nd January 2012 it always brings fantastic entertainment, drama and live coverage on Sky Sports. Here you can find a complete betting preview, best odds, free predictions and exclusive free bet offers.
Until just last week it was looking a mere formality that Phil Taylor would regain his most coveted title and be crowned world champion for a 16th time later this winter.
However, defeat in the second round of the Players Championship Finals at the hands of Mervyn King showed that The Power is still fallible, and revived some doubt about whether he will reassume the mantle of world champion. At odds of 2.10 () there is certainly scope to suggest looking elsewhere.
The FavouriteTaylor kicks off his world championship campaign against the winner of the preliminary round match between Japan’s Haruki Muramatsu and Sweden’s Dennis Nilsson. One of those two will get their 15 minutes of fame when they meet Taylor in round one, but it may not last much longer than a quarter of an hour as the world number one should wrap it up in straight sets, probably without dropping a leg.
However, his task begins to get exponentially more difficult in the second round. There he is likely to meet one of the emerging forces in the game, PDC World Championship debutant Dave Chisnall; a player whose power scoring could push Taylor all the way. Following that he could meet Andy Hamilton at the last-16 stage, then Paul Nicholson or Raymond van Barneveld in the quarter-finals before a potential semi-final clash with Gary Anderson.
The Power is a deserving favourite, and remains the man to beat at Alexandra Palace, but at odds of 2.10 () to win the title there are much better bets to be had elsewhere.
The ChallengersAs ever, the best betting options come from the opposite side – the bottom half – of the draw to Taylor. In that bottom half is defending champion Adrian Lewis. Jackpot has had a disappointing second-half of this season but showed signs that he was rediscovering some of his best form at the recent Grand Slam.
One of the most naturally gifted players in the game, he can be let down by his inconsistencies and lapses in concentration. But the extra motivation of the world championships helped him focus his game 12 months ago, and can do so again here.
He’s also been handed a favourable draw this year, kicking off with a match against Nigel Heydon followed by a second round match against Robert Thornton or Ian White then possibly Wayne Jones in the last 16. Wes Newton or Terry Jenkins are likely to provide stern tests in the quarters, but by that time he should be in full flow, while he his scripted to meet James Wade – more on him later – in the semis.
At odds of 10.00 () Adrian Lewis looks a solid bet to retain his World Championship title this winter.
The One to AvoidJames Wade made a shock second round exit at the hands of Mensur Suljovic last year, and could fall at the same hurdle this time around. Like Lewis, Wade is one of the more naturally talented players in darts but can also blow hot and cold throughout tournaments and matches.
Unlike Lewis, he has a tricky draw here. His opening round match against one of the preliminary round qualifiers won’t pose too many threats, but he is scheduled to meet one of the sport’s most improved players this year, Peter Wright, in the second round. Snakebite has recently pushed Wes Newton and Phil Taylor all the way in the early rounds of televised majors, and has beaten The Machine in their two previous meetings this year.
Should he see off Wright then he could face either of the Players Championship Finals finalists, Mark Webster or Kevin Painter, in the quarters, which would then be followed by the aforementioned potential semi-final clash with Lewis.
Given the complexity of his route to the final Wade is worth avoiding at odds of 12.00 () in the World Championship winner betting.
The OutsiderFollowing on from the anticipation that Peter Wright could cause an upset in his second round match, he looks a worthwhile punt at odds of 500.00 ().
Having beaten Co Stompe and Paul Nicholson in last year’s championship, defeating Gary Anderson in the European Championships earlier this year, and come within a whisker of defeating Taylor at the World Grand Prix in October, Snakebite has gained invaluable confidence and experience.
He posted a 103 three-dart average in his opening round match against Denis Ovens in Doncaster last weekend, to show that he can score with the best of them, and also possess the calm and focussed demeanour necessary in darts.
The Picks of the First RoundThe tournament begins on Thursday evening with Jamie Caven versus Roland Scholten, and we could kick off, in the betting sense, with a shock. The Dutchman is priced up at odds of 2.38 () for the win and looks to have a good chance of progressing to the last 32 for the first time in four years against an opponent who is drastically out of form.
Caven has suffered first round losses in all five of his televised major appearances this season and showed little sign of arresting his slump in the Players Championship Finals last weekend.
Scott Rand showed in Doncaster exactly what he is capable of and will come into this tournament full of confidence. Having seen off Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade in successive rounds he produced his best ever televised performance and put in his name on the darting map. He’ll need to produce his best once again at Alexandra Palace but if he can he has enough to see off Andy Smith at odds of 2.32 ().
And the final first round fixture to look at is the Saturday afternoon match-up between Robert Thornton and Ian White. Thornton was laid low with a bout of pneumonia earlier this year, and has never really recovered his form since. White, on the other hand, will be buoyed by his recent performances at the Grand Slam of Darts, where he beat Van Barneveld. At odds of 2.38 () White is worth backing in the opening round.
Suggested Bets: Adrian Lewis to win PDC World Championships @ 10.00
Peter Wright to win PDC World Championships @ 500.00
Ian White to beat Robert Thornton @ 2.38
Roland Scholten to beat Jamie Caven @ 2.38
