MEXICO v SENEGAL: MATCH PREVIEWMexico cruised to the knockout rounds by winning a weak Group B pool. In Group C, Senegal scrapped its way to an unexpected quarterfinals appearance, finishing second to host Great Britain and beating out Uruguay to advance.
Mexico topped Group B without conceding a goal for 270 minute of Olympic play; regardless of the opponent, that's an impressive feat on this stage. They opened up with a rather nervous 0-0 draw against South Korea before beating Gabon 2-0 and clinching their place in the quarter finals with a 1-0 victory over Switzerland.
Senegal are in the last eight following the disappointing exit of Uruguay, while Mexico topped Group B with two wins and a draw. They drew 1-1 with group winners Great Britain in their opening match after being a goal behind. They then easily disposed of Uruguay 2-0 before being held to a 1-1 draw by the United Arab Emirates.
Senegal drew a lot of criticism for making their opening group match against Great Britain a bruising encounter, with several fouls that somehow escaped the censure of yellow and even red cards.
On the offensive end, Moussa Konate is outperforming some of the best players in the world. The Maccabi Tel Aviv forward has been Sengegal's lone scorer so far, and he currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with four goals.
Despite this being their 10th Olympic games Mexico are yet to claim a medal for football. A medal at London 2012 would see El Tricolor become the first Concacaf representative to win one. Giovanni dos Santos is the only player in Mexico’s 18-man squad based outside of the country.
This should be an outstanding match with lots of pace and chances coming from both sides. Both teams are capable of winning and it’s unlikely Senegal will be able to hold a clean sheet against the class Mexico displays up top, which makes this match a solid candidate for both sides to score
