The tussle for gold in the men’s football tournament at London 2012 is one of the most anticipated events of the Olympic games. Brazil comes in as the betting favorites, just like they should be. Spain, Uruguay, Mexico, Great Britain are the most likely to get a medal, though teams like Senegal and South Korea could spring surprises. Group A: Great Britain, Senegal, United Arab Emirates, UruguayTeam GB will be coached by Stuart Peace, who has led the England under-21 team since 2007. Ryan Giggs is undoubtedly the stand out name in Great Britain’s squad. Sturridge and Richards are the other stars of the team. Uruguay have a vast number of young talents to choose from with centre back pairing Sebastian Coates (Liverpool) and Diego Polenta (Bari) providing a rock solid defence behind a talented midfield which is spearheaded by two of their over 23 picks Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez. Senegal and UAE lack the quality that Uruguay and GB possess but the African boys have athletic skills and physical power that could be dangerous for all their opponents.
Uruguay to win Group A at 2.63 () is a very good price. They had two wins in its warm-up games and the attacking talent within the squad is one of the best in the tournament by far.

Group B: Mexico, Korea Republic, Gabon, SwitzerlandSwitzerland look the strongest side in this group. Philippe Senderos will offer a commanding presence at the back, while the 18-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri has the potential to be the star of the tournament. They have a slight advantage as they missed out on Euro 2012, which means they can select several of their top players.
Mexico has some decent talent which is headlined by Giovani Dos Santos. They have been involved in a few warm-up games for the tournament with their only positive result coming against Great Britain.
Gabon won’t be the whipping boys many have predicted them to be, as the spine of their CAF under-23 tournament is present at London 2012.
South Korea went unbeaten in qualification winning four and drawing four. They have never bettered a quarter final finish but will also be confident of progression. Group B is arguably the most open of all the groups.

Group C: Brazil, Egypt, Belarus, New ZealandBrazil may have enjoyed outstanding success in most levels of soccer, but Olympic gold has eluded the country despite repeated sustained attempts to win in. Top players like Neymar, along with AC Milan’s Alexandre Pato, Porto’s Hulk, Tottenham’s Sandro and Manchester United’s Rafael have been all named in the squad. They looked really good against Great Britain and with all the firepower in their squad they will be tough to stop.
Belarus will be looking to take points off Egypt and New Zealand in order to progress. The team is not very experienced and they have been very poor in the Toulon tournament. Renan Bressan, a Brazilian born attacking midfielder, is the emerging star of Belarus.
Egypt are hugely experienced having been together as agroup since March 2011 and have played 28 games while New Zealand will be massive underdogs here. The three 3 overage players for Egypt (Aboutrika, Fathi and Motaeb) will leave tournament after group stage due to club commitments.

Group D: Spain, Japan, Honduras, MoroccoSpain have just finished celebrating their Euro 2012 success. They playthe same style as the senior side and should have no problems doing so in straight forward group. Topping the group is vital so as to avoid playing Brazil in quarter finals. Even without these big names, the squad will include the likes of Adrian, David De Gea, Cesar Azpilicueta, Oriol Romeu, Ander Herrera and Iker Muniain.
Japan didn't have positive results in the recent Toulon tournament but they have prepared well with 17 games played over the last year (Winning 11 and losing 6). Only one overage player was selected and then they have left put two key players.
Morocco would have been favourites with Belhanda, Chamakh and Taraabt. The loss of all three players is too much. Coach Verbeek only selected two overage players, Captain Houssine Kharja and Nordine Amrabat.
Honduras will make up the numbers and cannot qualify. The Concacaf qualification is not strong and they qualified with a bit of good fortune.
