Man City host Liverpool in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final on Wednesday night. Manchester City will be looking to recover from Sunday’s FA Cup defeat against Manchester United and they recently beat Liverpool 3-0 in the Premier League, although this Carling Cup encounter is the first of two legs and it could be a lot closer. MANCHESTER CITY vs LIVERPOOL: MATCH PREVIEW- Revenge will be on both teams mind when Manchester City welcomes Liverpool to the Etihad stadium for the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final on Wednesday (kick off 8pm, live on sky sports). Manchester City booked their spot in the last four by beating Arsenal 1-0, while the Reds made it through by winning 2-0 at Chelsea.

- City will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat in the FA Cup to bitter cross town rivals United while Liverpool will want to show that they are better than the 3-0 score lines suggested when the sides recently met at the same venue.

- We only have to go back to the 3rd January for the most recent head to head, a 3-0 win for City assisted by some poor goalkeeping in the first half from Pepe Reina. Gareth Barry was dismissed in the second half but City added a third goal to the two that arrived in the first period. In previous head to heads, Liverpool were beaten 3-0 at this stadium last season and drew 0-0 in 2009/10 so they haven't scored here in three visits since a 3-2 win in October 2008.

- City's loss to United on Sunday was the first time City have been beaten at the Eithad Stadium this season although the mitigating circumstances revolve around a 12th minute red card for Kompany (when City trailed 1-0). That aside, ten straight Premier League wins in front of their own supporters have been the backbone of City's title challenge.

- Manchester City will be without of Yaya Toure, who has departed, along with his brother Kolo, for the African Cup of Nations and the Vincent Kompany who is suspended, although City are hopeful that the defender will be available after they appealed his sending off. Mario Balotelli is still hampered with an injury, while Edin Dzeko was rested at the weekend and is likely to partner Aguero in attack come Wednesday.

- Liverpool will name a strong line up as they chase their first Carling cup final appearance since they lost to Chelsea in 2005. Glenn Johnson, Daniel Agger, Martin Skertel and Luis Enrique should all return after being rested for the FA cup clash with Oldham while Steven Gerrard should start after a good showing against Oldham alongside Jordan Henderson and one of Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing in a three man midfield. Luis Suarez will miss the second game of an 8-match ban in the first leg of this semi-final. Additionally, Downing was arrested last night in a bar for assault. He has, of course, since been bailed, but this is the last thing that Liverpool need after everything that has happened recently.

- Liverpool have won more games away from Anfield this season, and have lost just twice in nine games outside of Liverpool. The ever improving Reds have only lost two games in 17 fixtures and will be backing themselves to progress to the final.
