OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE vs LILLE: MATCH PREVIEW- Marseille, who have narrowed the gap with the leaders after a mediocre start to the season, swept past Caen 3-0 in a League Cup quarter-final this week with Mathieu Valbuena and Loic Remy more than compensating for the Ayews' departure for the Africa Cup of Nations.

- Marseille, who have qualified for the Champions League knockout phase and are on course to win both the League and French Cups, are sixth in the standings with 31 points from 19 games, nine points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Since January 2010, Marseille have only lost three of 40 Ligue 1 matches at their Stade Vélodrome, (against Caen, Lille and Rennes) whilst winning 25 and drawing 12.

- Lille who are third, four points off the pace, conceded their first domestic defeat in five months in a 2-1 loss at Olympique Lyon in a League Cup quarter-final on Wednesday. Lille are currently on a run of 17 league matches without defeat, the longest unbeaten run in the club’s top flight history. It is also the longest in L1 since Rennes went unbeaten for 18 matches in 2008/09.

- Lille are currently the Ligue 1’s second highest goalscorers with 33 goals already, and what looked like one of the league’s most porous defences at the beginning of the campaign, OM’s backline has improved to a point where they have only shipped 19 goals all season. Key to their solidity is goalkeeper Steve Mandanada, defenders Souleymane Diawara and Stephane M’Bia as well as midfielder Alou Diarra

- Moussa Sow will be a missing threat despite his slightly lower than expected goal return this season, he is away on African Cup Of Nations duty. However, his success largely depends on how much joy Hazard, Cole and possibly Dimitri Payet get in creating those chances for him so Ireneusz Jeleń will look to profit from his absence and take some of those chances if given a start.

- The last few times these teams have met the matches have been fantastic to watch, physical and open ended. Their first meeting in the league ended 3-2 to Lille, the French Super Cup match to start the season ended 5-4 to Marseille and even going back to last season they ended 3-1 to Marseille and 2-1 to Lille.
