GERMANY v ITALY: MATCH PREVIEWGermany won all three of their games in Group B, the strongest of the four groups comprising of Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark. Each of those wins arrived with a single goal margin with the Germans getting the better of Portugal 1-0, the Dutch (2-1) and Denmark (also 2-1). Joachim Low’s side have cruised through to the semi-final of the competition thanks to an easy 4-2 win against Greece.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has explained that he will not be 100% fit for the Euro 2012 semi-final: he was force to miss the final stage of the season after tearing his ankle ligaments and the same injury is still causing him problems. It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Lukas Podolski, Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller are restored to the team, with Andre Schürrle looking particularly bright as Germany created chances at will against the Greeks.
The Italians finished second in their group after Spain. The two 1:1 draws with the world champion and Croatgia were followed by the only victory so far – 2:0 over Ireland. In the quarterfinal Italy dominated against England, but managed to win only after penalty shootout.
Christian Maggio is suspended having picked up his second yellow card of the tournament in the quarter-finals, meaning Abate will continue at right-back with the impressive Balzaretti on the left. Both Giorgio Chiellini and Thiago Motta could be back available in the starting lineup.
Germany have failed to beat Italy in five Internationals going back to Euro 1996. There have been three draws (two 0-0’s) and two Italy wins, while their last match in Feb 2011 finished all square 1-1 with Miroslav Klose scoring the opening goal and Giuseppe Rossi netting the equaliser. The team of Joachim Low can break the tradition and take revenge for the last defeat at the home World Cup in 2006.
What is important is the fact that Germans played their game against Greece on 22nd June while Italy had their 120 minutes against England on 24th. That leaves them with 2 days less to come back to full strength after a very difficult game while it all looked much easier for Germans especially Joachim Loew decided to make some changes in his starting line up leaving his two best goalscorer Mario Gomez and Lucas Podolski on bench against Greeks. If you add the fact that Loew have one of the youngest teams and Prandelli has some of the oldest players including his key man – Andrea Pirlo the advantage is on German site.
GERMANY v ITALY: PROBABLE LINEUPSGermany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Khedira, Schweinsteiger/Kroos; Muller, Ozil, Podolski; Gomez
Italy (4-1-3-2): Buffon, Balzaretti, Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini/Bonucci, Marchisio, De Rossi, Montolivo, Pirlo, Balotelli, Cassano/Di Natale
