Germany's clash with Argentina in Frankfurt on Wednesday is arguably the match-clou of the International Friendlies programme. The host will try to put their Euro 2012 disappointment behind them when facing Messi & co., who have been in impressive form of late. GERMANY v ARGENTINA: MATCH PREVIEWThe Germans still look to put behind the disappointment from Euro 2012 where they were beaten by Italy in the semi-finals. Before of that match, Germany had been foot perfect in qualifying for Poland/Ukraine and carried that winning streak into the group stage with wins over Portugal, Denmark and Holland before beating Greece in the quarter finals.
Joachim Loew’s side includes 17 players from Germany’s Euro 2012 campaign, with near misses from that squad Sven Bender and teenager Julian Draxler also getting the nod. Apart from Miroslav Klose, no player called up for the Argentina friendly is over the age of 25.
Philip Lahm leads the list of German absences, along with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez, and Arsenal duo Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker. First-choice goalkeeper Neuer will miss the match due to an injury, leaving Ron-Robert Zieler as the only fit shot-stopper in the squad.
Argentina look set to field a strong team, with Lionel Messi leading the line with Sergio Aguero. 30-year-old Newcastle centre-back Fabricio Coloccini has been recalled after a three-year international absence. Lavezzi and Higuain are both included, but Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez continues to miss out.
Argentina's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign is well under way and after a poor start which brought a 1-0 defeat in Venezuela and 1-1 draw at home to Bolivia, they won 2-1 in Colombia at the back end of last year. This year they thrashed Ecuador 4-0 in Buenos Aires, defeated Switzerland 3-1 in February and Brazil 4-3 in June. In the last two friendlies against Switzerland and Brazil, Lionel Messi has scored hat-tricks.
Germany have registered victories in two of the past three meetings between the two nations, winning 4-0 in their last match during 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
