Ligue 1 is the first of the major European Leagues to get underway and there is only one team that people are talking about as the favourites for the title: Paris Saint-Germain. Few predicted last year that Montpellier would win the Ligue 1 title so we can always expect surprises in Ligue 1 but this year will be very hard to defeat PSG. Find here our predictions about winners, relegation and top goalscorer for this Le Championnat season.

LIGUE 1 2012/2013: TOP CONTENDERSWith the additions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marco Verratti and, probably, Lucas Moura – it’s hard not to think of PSG as the favourites coming into 2012/2013. Anyway, it will be intriguing to see if PSG manage to mould together as a team, or if they’ll be another team of superstars that is unable to play together. The most intriguing questions is about the attack. Lavezzi, Ibrahimovic and Lucas could be the starters, leaving Pastore, Menez and Nenè on the bench considering that Ancelotti spent most of last season playing with three defensive midfielders.
Montpellier have been weakened this summer, having sold Olivier Giroud to Arsenal. The top scorer in the league last season, he has been replaced by Argentine forward Emiliano Herrera from Union Espanola: five strikes in ten Copa Libertadores matches were enough to convince Montpellier to take a €2.8 million punt on him. Younes Belhanda, another star of last season, and captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (unless AC Milan return with a much-improved offer for him) will stay.
Although they did not live up to expectations, Lyon have not added any new faces to their squad just yet which may surprise a few. With just six teams in Ligue 1 conceding more goals than them, it is in defence that you would say they need to sharpen up. Ederson has been released, whilst defenders Jonathan Mensah and Timothee Kolodzieczak have both departed too. With all their money going into a new stadium, Remi Garde will rely on young talents such as Maxime Gonalons, Clement Grenier and Alexandre Lacazette. Anyway, not competing in the Champions League and with Montpellier and Lille weakened, they could finish in the first three spots this term. Lyon’s pre-season has started well, having lifted the Trophee des Champions in New York with a penalties victory over champions Montpellier.
Elsewhere, Lille have been busy strengthening after receiving a French transfer record fee for Eden Hazard. He joined Chelsea in the summer's big move, but coming in the other direction is Salomon Kalou, adding experience and a goalscoring threat. They have also signed Marvin Martin from Sochaux. Though his hopes of a move to Newcastle were dashed by the English club's paltry offer for him, the continued presence of French international right-back Mathieu Debuchy is a bonus.
Marseille's squad will remain largely unchanged from the one which went 11 games without a win in a disastrous second half of last season to leave them with a mid-table finish. Deschamps has been forced out of the club and the only significant signing has been Florian Raspentino. New coach Baup will inherit a good team: Amalfitano, Valbuena, Ayew brothers and Alou Diarra are very good players. Cesar Azpilicueta appears set to depart.
Ligue 1 2012/2013 Winner Odds:
- PSG @ 1.40
- Lille 10 @
- Lyon @ 12.00
- Marseille @ 19.00
- Montpellier @ 21.00
- Bordeaux @ 30.00
- Stade Rennes @ 51.00
- Saint-Etienne @ 101.00
- Toulouse @ 151.00
LIGUE 1 2012/2013: OTHER CONTENDERSBordeaux showed signs of promise at the end of last season when Francis Gillot piloted with success a 3-5-2 system. The team from the south west are well balanced, have a good manager in Gillot, and should be set for another Europa League push this season.
Toulouse’s defensive record last year impressed many, and they have managed to keep more or less the same set of players to hopefully build on it next season. The loss of Daniel Congre is a blow in that department, though Jonathan Zebina should help to fill the void he has left.
Stade Rennais have also managed to keep a fairly steady set of players for the upcoming campaign. With the best academy and with their collection of youthful exuberance and Antonetti's fiercely competitive edge, the club can look forward to another season in the top half of Ligue 1.
Last year was another good one for Saint-Etienne. They were even in contention for the Champions League at one point, but ultimately could not keep up with a resurgent Bordeaux in the battle for the Europa League. With Pierre-Emmerick Aubameyang one of the most talented strikers of the league, and with Stephane Ruffier enjoying an excellent season last time out, St.Etienne can break in the top six.
Having secured a solid mid-table position last season following their promotion to Ligue 1, Evian have bolstered their squad by bringing in Daniel Wass from Benfica. There are enough teams who are worse than them though to ensure they survive with some breathing space.

LIGUE 1 2012/2013: RELEGATIONThe fight to stay in Ligue 1 always is an incredibly tense battle and this year looks set to be the same. It is no surprise that two of the promoted sides – Troyes and Reims are both being tipped at evens to face the drop. Brest, Ajaccio, Nice and Valenciennes may face another battle against relegation, while Sochaux and Lorient will hope for a more comfortable campaign than last time around.
Ligue 1 2012/2013 Relegation Odds:
- Troyes @ 2.00
- Stade de Reims @ 2.38
- Sochaux @ 2.50
- Ajaccio @ 2.88
- Brest @ 3.25
- Valenciennes @ 4.00
- Bastia @ 5.50
- Lorient @ 5.50
- Nancy @ 5.50
- Nice @ 5.50
- Evian @ 8.50
LIGUE 1 2012/2013: TOP GOALSCORERAfter being twice the leading scorer in Serie A (including last season), Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the big favourite to take the Golden Boot in France this campaign. His teammate Nene found the net 21 times in 2011/12 but he's not sure to be in the starting lineup this season.
Lisandro Lopez looks to be Ibrahimovic’s biggest rival for the award. He scored 27 goals in the last two years ans will have Bafetimbi Gomis as his partner.
Emanuel Herrera could be the suprise as well as the highly-rated forward Loic Remy, despite his future is still in doubt.
Ligue 1 2012/2013 Top Goalscorer Odds:
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic @ 4.00
- Lisandro Lopez @ 11.00
- Bafetimbi Gomis @ 15.00
- Loic Remy @ 15.00
- Emanuel Herrera @ 21.00
- Ezequiel Lavezzi @ 21.00
- Salomon Kalou @ 21.00
- Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang @ 34.00
- Nene @ 26.00
- Pierre Andre Gignac @ 26.00
- Andre Ayew @ 46.00
