Manchester City kick off their Europa League campaign with a tricky away match at former European champions Porto on Thursday night. Despite the fact that manager Villas-Boas is gone and a few key players like Falcao, FC Porto has managed to keep an unbeaten home record in Europe. FC PORTO vs MANCHESTER CITY: MATCH PREVIEWPorto managed to stay unbeaten at home, recording one victory over Shakhtar Donetsk with 2:1 and two draw games against APOEL and Zenit. Their inability to do well away from Portugal however, caused them to lose a lot of points and finish in third spot. Anyway, Porto have lost at home just once in Europe in the last two years, and are also unbeaten at the Estadio do Dragao stadium in all competitions since February last year.
City's Champions League debut ended in tears. In the Champions League and it was results away from home which cost them a place in the last 16. They were beaten 2-0 at Bayern Munich and 2-1 in Napoli: they’ll need to be at their best if they’re to come away with something from this match in Porto, a venue that’s been a difficult place to play for many English teams over the years.
This season will be less successful for the team of Vitor Pereira. They lie third in the table in the Portuguese Championship, eight points behind leaders Benfica. They were in good touch last weekend, to recover from their first defeat of the League in two years to beat Uniao Leiria 4-0 at the Estádio do Dragão.
Manager Vitor Pereira will not have his first-choice central defender Nicolas Otamendi available due to suspension and therefore Danilo and Rolando will be expected to pair up for Thursday's encounter. Lucho Gonzalez, who returned to Porto in January for his second spell with the club, is expected to be part of the midfield trio along with Joao Moutinho and Fernando.
African Cup of Nations is over, so Toure is expected to be part of the three-men City midfield. Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri, both of whom sat out the 1-0 win at the weekend, are expected to be fighting for one spot in the starting line-up. Mancini is also planning to play Mario Balotelli in Portugal following his four-game Premier League ban for stamping on Scott Parker
Both these sides were expecting to still be in the Champions League and both sides can put their failure down to a lack of quality attacking. The British side managed just nine goals in 78 attempts during the Champions League group stages, while the Portistas were more miss-than-hit, with a massive 54 shots off-target and only 42 on. This lack of accuracy up front was highlighted by a dominance of possession by both sides, with Porto at 54% and City at 57% for their six games.
