PORTUGAL v NETHERLANDS: MATCH PREVIEWPortugal edged Denmark 3-2 in their second match thanks to a Varela goal in the 87th marker, while Pepe and Helder Postiga scored in the first half to put Portugal up by two goals. However, the defense struggled to keep their concentration and captain Cristiano Ronaldo missed a couple of late chances.
A draw isn’t enough for Portugal as a surprise win by Denmark would send them out, so they simply need to not lose and match or better the Danes result to take their place in the final 8.
The Portuguese are expected to retain their starting lineup, with Helder Postiga being the main striker. Although Nani was thought of as being struggling with an injury he did play against Denmark and quite well too.
Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Germany left Bert van Marwijk's team needing to beat the Seleccao on Sunday and then rely on results elsewhere. If Joachim Low's side fail to win against Denmark, Netherlands will be eliminated regardless of their own result having lost both of their games so far.
The Dutch team got their tournament off to the worst possible start when going down in a 0-1 shock loss to unfancied Denmark, despite have a huge 29 shots in the match The problem for the Dutch was that the accuracy was sorely missing and only 20% of those efforts were on target. Although on paper Holland do benefit from the best attacking potential at the Euro 2012 tournament, with both the Bundesliga’s and the Premier League’s top scorers in their squad, along with such attacking-minded players like Sneijder, Robben and van der Vaart, they have been very unfruitful in attack.
Mathijsen has recovered but he was not very effective in keeping at bay the Germans in the last outing. His teammate in defence, youngster Willems, fared worse and van Marwijk may be thinking about a replacement for the left-back. The ineffective Afellay may make way for Vice-captain Van der Vaart.
The Dutch defence has certainly not been at it’s best this tournament and Portugal have got enough trickery up front to really give the back four another tough 90 minutes. The frustrated Dutch may take it all out against Portugal but Ronaldo is equally annoyed with his latest displays. This can be an opportunity for redeeming themselves.
