The Euro 2012 Final is down to two European heavyweights which will not surprise anyone with the Final being battled out between Italy v Spain. EURO 2012 FINAL - SPAIN v ITALY: PMATCH PREVIEWThe knockout rounds saw Spain impress in beating France 2-0 in the quarter finals before they edged their way past Portugal on penalty kicks (0-0 aet).
Italy also had to rely on penalty kicks to find a way past England (0-0 aet) in the last eight. Then Mario Balotelli inspired Italy to overcome the much fancied betting favourites Germany last night in a thrilling 2-1 Semi-Final victory. Whether Spain start the match with a six-man midfield, or they opt for a striker (perhaps even Fernando Torres?) remains to be seen. But Vicente del Bosque has no injury concerns ahead of the big match, so he has a full deck from which to pick his hand.
Italy's main decision is whether to stick with a 4-3-1-2 formation that has seen them progress through the latter stages impressively or revert to a 3-man backline that helped earn a draw with Spain in the opener. Maggio returns to the Italian squad after he was suspended for the game against Germany.
The sides last met – of course – in their Group C match on 10 June, which ended 1-1 thanks to goals from Cesc Fabregas for Spain and Di Natale for Italy. Spain won the corner count 7-2 and enjoyed 62% of the possession but it was pretty even on clear cut chances. Prior to that, the sides met in the quarter final on this competition four years ago. The match was goalless and Spain ended up winning on penalties 4-2.
Spain have gone 19 competitive games without defeat and Casillas hasn’t conceded a goal wince Di Natale’s in the Group C match earlier in the tournament.
It should be noted that Spain have never beaten Italy in normal time in a competitive match, and there has only ever once been more than two goals in a match between the sides (a 2-1 Italy victory in the 1994 World Cup quarter final).
21 year old Balotelli now looks betting favourite to bag the competitions Golden Boot award with his 3 goals scored so far. He just requires one more to make sure he doesn’t share the prize with Gomez, Ronaldo, Mandžukić and Dzagoev.
