Novak Djokovic has been in imperious form in the past two weeks and enter this match on the back of a four-sets win over Roger Federer (6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3), bouncing back extremely well from his very sloppy five-setter against Gilles Simon in the Round of 16. After that, 'Nole' disposed of the dangerous Kei Nishikori in straight-sets in the quarterfinal. The Serb has now reached the final of 16 of the last 21 Grand Slams.

Andy Murray was pushed to all five sets by Milos Raonic in the semis. The World's n.13 caused the Brit serious problems and went 1-0 and 2-1 ahead before Murray outlasted the Canadian in a five set victory (6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 in just over four hours). The semifinals marked the first true challenge for Murray, who otherwise cruised through his matches. In the quarterfinals, the Scot defeated a feisty David Ferrer in four sets. In the previous rounds, Murray dispatched Bernard Tomic and teen sensation Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

Djokovic holds a 21-9 overall head-to-head lead over Murray and 10-1 record in the last 11 meetings. The 2016 Australian Open final is the repeat of the 2015 edition when the Serb beat the Briton in four sets, with the final set going to the World No 1, 6-0.

Murray could become the first man in the Open Era to win the Australian Open title after losing four finals as the Scot finished as runner-up to Federer in 2010, and to Djokovic in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Djokovic will have the much fresher legs after Murray’s marathon semifinal and given that the Serb has one day of extra rest.
