The Sunbets Stayers' Hurdle, the leading long distance hurdle event in the national calendar, is the highlight of the third day of racing at the Cheltenham Festival. Formerly known as the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, this contest is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle run over three miles, for horses aged four years and upwards, with twelve hurdles that must be cleared and a £275,000 prize purse on offer. The weight allowance is eleven stone for four-year-olds and eleven stone ten pounds for five-year-olds and upwards.

There is an allowance of seven pounds for both mares and fillies. This year's renewal looks a bery open event and many top class horses will fancy their chances of Festival glory.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Stayers' Hurdle renewal and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

Last year’s Coral Cup winner – SUPASUNDAE was last seen winning the Irish Champion Hurdle beating Faugheen over a 2m trip. He was narrowly beaten by the brilliant Apple’s Jade before that and also finished second to Yanworth in a competitive Liverpool Hurdle.

SAM SPINNER has done nothing but improve all season and was a good winner of the JLT Reve De Sivola Long Walk Hurdle when last seen. He saw off some talented horses that day including L’Ami Serge and Unowhatimeanharry for his first Grade 1 win.

YANWORTH did not really hit the heights expected of him over so he is expected to revert back to hurdles. He beat Supasundae at Aintree last April and is another proven course winner at Cheltenham.

Willie Mullins' PENHILL has not been seen since last April so you should have to take his fitness on trust altough Mullins insists that he is training very well. A smart horse on the flat, he has turned into a better hurdler producing a clear career best when victorious at the Festival.

UNOWHATIMEANHARRY doesn't seem past his best now. Since moving to Harry Fry, he has lost just one race and that was his disappointing performance in the Stayers Hurdle last season when finishing 3rd.

L'AMI SERGE travelled all over Sam Spinner in the Long Walk before finding nothing and finishing runner up. His French Champion Hurdle win shows that he is clearly extremely talented as well as his good performnce in the County Hurdle last year when he finished behind Arctic Fire

THE NEW ONE looks an interesting proposition now over the staying distance. He has ran in the Champion Hurdle for the last four seasons and as he’s getting older he has just lost that little bit of speed.

BACARDY'S' season has not gone to plan over fences and he was last seen falling behind Snow Falcon. On his best form he would have to be given a chance and we should not forget he won a Grade 1 at Punchestown last April.

LIL ROCKERFELLER was a gallant second in this last year and has a chance having been freshened up for this.

THE WORLD'S END gained compensation at Aintree, winning the Grade One hurdle there, and we have previously seen him in good form when he won a Grade Two hurdle at Haydock before he went to Cheltenham.

WHOLESTONE loves it round here and is worth a look as an each-way shot. He is a smooth traveller with a decent turn of foot for a stayer when his hurdling is fluent.

AUGUSTA KATE was no match for Apple’s Jade in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown last time but could be an option for an each-way bet.

LET'S DANCE was a winner at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting, staying on strongly to win a Grade 3 event. She won the Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle at last year’s Festival but she will need to improve if she’s to trouble Apple’s Jade.

COLIN'S SISTER, OLD GUARD and DONNA'S DIAMOND are the outsiders of the race.
