The highlight on day two of the Cheltenham Festival meeting is the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase. It's a Grade 1 chase covering two miles, for horses aged five years and upwards. With 12 fences to be jumped, this contest is a great test of speed and jumping ability. It is the most prestigious minimum distance chase in national hunt racing and involves a prize purse of £320,000. Traditionally the race has fewer entrants than the other grade one Cheltenham events. We have a very hot favourite at this stage in the form of last year's Arkle Challenge winner Altior who has proven unbeatable during his career.

With such top horses expected to run the 2018 Champion Chase be prepared to see plenty of excitement during the race and the potential for drama.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Champion Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

ALTIOR is unbeaten in twelve races over hurdles and fences. In his first season he made it 5 from 5 over the smaller obstacles and also won the Supreme Novices Hurdle. He went on to win his first four chases on the bridle and then won the Arkle Chase by six lengths from Cloudy Dream last year. He was handed a stiff test against a race-fit Politologue in the Game Spirit Chase earlier this month but he he went on to win by an impressive four lengths. However, it was announced on Monday that Nicky Henderson's charge was lame and some puss had been located in the frog of his foot.

This season’s Tingle Creek winner POLITOLOGUE has won six of his nine starts over fences. His best performance came when beating Fox Norton in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in December. He has since won at Kempton but was runner up to Altior in the Game Spirit last time out.

DOUVAN was unbeaten in 14 races untile he was sent off the short-priced favourite in this 12 months ago but ran no sort of race to be 7th. He has not been seen since and in December was initially ruled out of the current campaign as a result of a separate injury. He has recovered more swiftly than expected, however, and seems likely to line up.

Willie Mullins’ MIN had most of last year off but has returned with a victory at Gowran Park in November and then was second to Simply Ned at Leopardstown after being demoted by the stewards.

SPECIAL TIARA – the winner of this last year - has failed to shine this season.  He was third to Min in his last start at Leopardstown in the Grade Two Coral Chase during the “Dublin Racing Festival”.

CHARBEL put up a bold bid from the front in last year's Arkle Trophy, before falling at the second last, when still in front of Altior. He recently finished a fine fourth to Politologue in Tingle Creek and could be the dark horse of the race.

AR MAD slammed Bristol De Mai by ten lengths in the Grade One Henry VIII Novices’ Chase back in 2015 but he has been held back through injuries. On his most recent run, he finished 3rd to Politologue in the Tingle Creek. Clearly, it was a big step in the right direction.

GOD'S OWN is a top-class Grade-1 winning chaser at his best and might have gone very close last year but a bad blunder two out. He has seemingly been kept fresh for another crack at this race this year.

ORDINARY WORLD finished 3rd to Altior in Arkle last season and he has continued in good form this time round. Would have finished second to Min at Leopardstown last time but for blundering the last.
