The JLT Novices' Chase is the newest race at the Cheltenham Festival, added in 2011 and run over two and a half miles. The reason for the addition was to have a middle distance for the novice chasers. The 2017 edition was won by the 6/4 favourite Yorkhill for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh. Find below our Cheltenham 2018 JLT Novices race preview, with odds, tips, predictions, trends, free bets and betting promotions.

The JLT Novice Chase was a brand new edition to the Cheltenham Festival in 2011 and has been dominated by Willie Mullins in the last three seasons as the Irish trainers has guided Vautour (2015), Black Hercules (2016) and Yorkhill (2017) to victory. Although young, the JLT Novices' Chase has quickly become an important part of the Cheltenham Festival and we expect to continue to see that over the coming years. It's a Grade 1 chase run over two miles and four furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards, with a prize money of £150,000.

The race will attract plenty of top-class horses as it falls between the 2 mile Arkle Challenge trip and the 3 mile RSA Chase distance.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's JTL Novices' Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

INVITATION ONLY kicked off his chasing campaign with a fall at Punchestown. He won his next two starts including a Grade 3 contest and then finished 3rd behind Monalee and stablemate AL BOUM PHOTO in a driving finish in the Flogas Novice Chase at Leopardstown.

SHATTERED LOVE finished down the field in the Neptune last season. She has improved over fences and has won four of her five starts. The only time she was beaten was in the Florida Pearl Chase at Punchestown when runner-up to Jury Duty. Her best effort to date was when winning the Neville Hotels Chase (Grade 1) at Leopardstown.

BENATAR only ran four times over hurdles. He started off at Ascot in November where he bolted up showing a lovely turn of foot. Then he He won by 9 lengths in a messy race at Plumpton and went back to Ascot where he outpointed Finian’s Oscar in a photo.

TERREFORT made a taking introduction at Huntingdon where he slammed a decent yardstick in Bentelimar by ten lengths. He was impressive when he got the better of subsequent Pendil Novices’ Chase winner Cyrname to win the Scilly Isles’ Novices’ Chase at Sandown.

MODUS as won three of his four starts over fences and looked in no trouble throughout his novice chasing season other than when falling in a novicey manner at Exeter. He has a good Festival form -  6th in the Coral Cup 2017 and 2nd behind Moon Racer in the Champion Bumper back in 2015. He won easily at Kempton last time, but this is much tougher.

FINIAN'S OSCAR has won his first two starts over fences but then suffered two defeats before being pulled up when returned to hurdles in heavy ground at Cheltenham in January. Fencing technique continues to leave a bit to be desired. He will be equipped with cheekpieces for the first time and with the benefit of a wind operation.

BIGMARTRE switched to fences this season, winning two novices handicaps at Ludlow and Newbury (by four and a half lengths from next-time-out winner Cyrname) before being beaten by Duke of Navan at Doncaster last time out.

SNOW FALCON finished five and a quarter lengths 5th of 11 to Monalee in Flogas Novices' Chase last time out.

Willie Mullins also saddles KEMBOY, an useful hurdler who has quickly made up into a better chaser, winning maiden at Fairyhouse in January by six lengths having survived a bad final-fence blunder.

WEST APPROACH is the outsider of the race.
