The Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle is the newest Cheltenham Race at the Festival and is considered the championship race for conditional (apprentice) jockeys in the United Kingdom. It's a National Hunt hurdle for conditional jockeys, run over two miles and four-and-a-half furlongs, for horses aged four years and upwards. The race offers a prize purse of £50,000. Surprisingly for an unrated race, the Martin Pipe Hurdle has produced some top quality winners in its short history, including Sir Des Champs and Don Poli.

The Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle is an extremely tough race to solve for punters as, like any other Cheltenham handicap, many horses will come into the race and look well handicapped on paper.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Hurdle and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

FLAWLESS ESCAPE has had three starts over hurdles so far and has finished in each position on the podium. His best performace cam when runner up to Total Recall at the Dublin Racing Festival, beaten just under four lengths.

DEAL D'ESTRUVAL is another interesting option for the Mullins' stable. has just had two starts since coming over from France and after winning on his debut at Tramore he was pitched into a 2m handicap at Leopardstown.
DIESE DES BIEFFES was send off favourite for the Lanzarote on his handicap debut but was never quote able to to get into the contest on ground softer than he had ever tries. Both wins have come on good, so the usual Festival ground will suit him perfectly.
Gordon Elliott’s SIRE DU BERLAIS was a winner in France. He has only had three starts and two of those was last season but finally made it to the racecourse last month where he ran a cracker to finish second at Fairyhouse behind Out Of The Loop.

BLOW BY BLOW was highly regarded in his bumper days and beat Moon Racer in the Champion Bumper at Punchestown in 2016. He has found Grade 1 company too hot at Naas in January, but firmly back on track when running away with a Thurles Grade 3 next time.

CARTER MCKAY was well-fancied for last year’s Champion Bumper but things didn’t quite go to plan for him that day and he finished down the field. He finished 3rd of 7 behind Tower Bridge b on his latest outing in a Grade 1 hurdle race at Leopardstown over 2m 6f last month.

MELROSE BOY won a Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the November meeting. He has only managed to win one of his three starts since that victory here at Cheltenham - the Grade Three Heroes Handicap Hurdle at Sandown.

MR BIG SHOT only had three starts under rules and won a bumper and two novice hurdles. He won by 17 lengths last time out back in April and should not be ruled out.

EARLY DOORS has been tried in novice events recently and has come up short against the likes of Mengli Khan and Samcro while COEUR DE LION had an unusual prep race for this, winning a staying handicap on Fibresand, and is no forlorn hope..

BRILLARE MOMENTO ran well at Sandown in January and then improved for a wind op to win at Towcester. She did that in good style and could be ahead of her mark at the moment.

POLI ROI was third in a Grade 1 at Punchestown behind Fayonagh last season, but he has not shown that level of form over hurdles so far. while AMOUR DE NUIT has been kept to the minimum trip recently but his 2nd to Poetic Rhythm at Chepstow at the beginning of the season proves he does stay and some improvement can be expected here.

A very hard to predict race in which other horses such as TOMMY RAPPER, LOUGH DERG SPIRIT, DREAM BERRY, BRELAN D'AS and BURROWS SAINT could have a chance to impress.

The Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle was only introduced to the Festival in 2009 so very few strong trends have been established at the moment.

  • There has only been 1 winning favourite so far
  • 6 of the 9 winners returned at a double-figure price (7 of the last 9 were 16/1 or less)
  • All 9 winners were 2nd season-hurdlers
  • 4 of the 9 winners won last time out
  • Every winner of this race has carried 11st or more
  • Irish have won 4 of the last 7 renewals (all making handicap debuts)
  • Only five and six year olds have won this race
