The Brown Advisory Plate is a hugely competitive handicap race at the Cheltenham Festival. It's a Grade 3 National Hunt chase run over two miles and five furlongs, for horses aged five years and upwards. Grade Three status means the top horses are all allowed to enter, which usually gives us a great field for the race.

This year's edition seems sure to be another tightly knit competitive handicap, with many horses arriving looking well handicapped and a maximum field size certain for the excellent prize money on offer.

And now we'll take a closer look at this year's Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

THE STORYTELLER suffered a setback that saw him miss the back end of last season. He returned when runner up to Invitation Only in the Kildare Novice Chase, and was in action again in the Dublin Racing Festival when only seven lengths behind Monalee in the Flogas.

TULLY EAST won here twelve months ago in the Listed Novices Handicap. Since then he finished 6th to Splash Of Ginge in the BetVictor Gold Cup and has ran 3rd behind the useful Patricks Park at Leopardstown

KING'S SOCKS finished under three lengths behind the brilliant Arkle favourite Footpad in a Grade 1 hurdle at Auteuil. He has had just one start in Britain and wasn’t knocked about when finishing 8 lengths behind Modus in a slowly run race at Kempton about a month ago.

ROMAIN DE SENAM ended last season with a decent second in Listed company at Ayr. This season he finished 5th to Splash Of Ginge in the BetVictor Gold Cup and last time out was 5th here in the Caspian Gold Cup.

LAST GOODBYE was 5th behind Tully East at the Festival last year but didn’t really improve on that until last time out at Leopardstown in February when he won a decent prize off just 10 stone.

MOVEWITHTHETIMES finished third of four to Kalondra over 2m5f at the track in December. Anyway, he demonstrated a high cruising speed when runner-up to Ballyandy in the 16-runner Betfair Hurdle last February.

BALLYALTON won the Close Brothers Chase a couple of years ago but unfortunately injury struck soon after. He returned to action last December and was a good 4th behind Guitar Pete here at Cheltenham.

GUITAR PETE can't be underestimate. He has won two decent prizes this season already. He also finished was 3rd in the Triumph Hurdle in his career.

WILLIE BOY impressively beat 9 rivals on return at Newbury in November but finished 20 lenghts behind Oldgrangewood when sixth of 8 at 3-1fav on his latest outing in a chase at Newbury over 2m 4f in December last year. We expect him to rediscover form here.

The abovementioned OLDGRANGEWOOD scored at 6-1 in a chase at Newbury over 2m 4f  on his latest outing in December last year, beating Jameson by 1/2 lenght, making it 4 of 8 over fences. He has only gone up 2 lb but this is a tougher assignment.

BALLYBOLLEY won nicely at Market Rasen in the Autumn, suggesting there was more to come. In his last outing, he performed very poor at Kempton.

Other possible contenders?
MERCIAN PRINCE, GO CONQUER, DRUMCLIFF and QUITE BY CHANCE are receiving good support in the betting while KING'S ODYSSEY and SPLASH GINGE could be good long shots options in our opinion.
