Chelsea vs Valencia match preview and predictions (UEFA Champions League, 6 December 2011)

Chelsea and Valencia meet in the final Champions League group fixture at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, with the winner progressing through to the knockout rounds and the loser destined for the Europa League. So it is going to be a tense night at Stamford Bridge and the longer the game stays goal less the more tension will be filtering down onto the pitch. CHELSEA vs VALENCIA: MATCH PREVIEW- Both sides go into the match level on 8 points, which is one behind Leverkusen. The German side will be expected to comfortably beat Genk and so it looks like Chelsea and Valencia are playing for second place on Tuesday evening.

- Chelsea must defeat or keep a clean sheet against Valencia on Tuesday or the Premier League club will not qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and fail their No. 1 goal of the season. If that happens, manager Andre Villas-Boas will likely be sacked and the club will have to ponder some major changes going forward. Chelsea appear to be over their slump in form, and have won their last two Premier League games 3-0, conquering Newcastle on Tyneside on Saturday.

- The Blues have won both of their home matches in the Champions League group stage so far this season, a 2-0 win over Leverkusen and a 5-0 thumping of Genk. That is in stark contrast to their away form, where they drew two and lost one.

- Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge are doing star turns. Another cause for cheer in the Stamford Bridge was Didier Drogba’s good form underscored by a goal in the weekend game. Lampard could be replaced by Meireles in the game on Tuesday, while Oriol Romeu could be key to midfield dominance by the home side.

- Valencia's record on the road so far in the Champions League has resulted in a 0-0 draw at Genk and a 2-1 defeat against Leverkusen. The same outcome as Chelsea’s road trips to those two. They are currently third in La Liga, just four points behind Barcelona with a game in hand over the Catalans, and Roberto Soldado is their main weapon, with nine league goals to his name. The recent form of Valencia with four wins and a loss in their last five games has been better than Chelsea’s.

- Against Chelsea, Valencia will seek to extend their current winning run to four, and they will rely on striker Soldado who has 14 goals from 20 games this season, aided by midfielders Jonas and Hernandez, and defensive midfielder Topal. But the good form of the team is clouded, ahead of the match, by injuries to Canales and Banega.
