Bundesliga big-match preview and predictions: Gladbach vs Borussia Dortmund (3 December 2011)

The German Bundesliga continues this week of fixtures with a local derby, this one is a top table clash that sees defending champions Borussia Dortmund make the short trip to Borussia-Park to take on Borussia Monchengladbach in a match that will decide who tops the table for week 16. GLADBACH vs DORTMUND : MATCH PREVIEW- Gladbach moved to the top of the Bundesliga last Friday night with a 3-0 win over Cologne and they were joined there by Dortmund on Saturday after they beat Schalke 2-0. This is not only a local derby or a matchup of first versus second but is a showcase for two of the emerging German talents to go head to head, while Mario Gotze vs. Marco Reus won’t garner as much attention as Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo there will be no shortage of entertainment for the neutral.

- Gladbach have won their last four Bundesliga games in a row and have been in impressive form lately. They have been very solid defensively and created many chances on the attack. Monchengladbach have won five and drawn two of their league matches in front of their own supporters this season, four of the games have seen backers of over 2.5 goals collect and they have kept three clean sheets. Stuttgart drew here 1-1 and Leverkusen 2-2 but five other sides all left empty handed. The pick of the home wins so far was undoubtedly a 5-0 demolition of Werder Bremen in the most recent game staged at Borussia Park and Monchengladbach were in the goals again last week, winning 3-0 at Cologne.

- Dortmund had a slow start to the season and the pressure on this young squad to perform in the UEFA Champions League seemed to get to them, however they look to be rounding into form on both fronts as they are on a eight match unbeaten run (record of 7-1-0) and in that span have scored twenty-two goals while only conceding three goals and have a “must win” match against French side Olympique Marseille mid-week.

- Gladbach’s biggest concern will be the fitness of Reus. An early knock in that game in Cologne left the 22-year-old hobbling although he did manage to complete 85 minutes, before scans subsequently showed that he had broken a toe. Favre will leave the decision late, but it may be enough to keep him out of this clash with the league leaders.

- For Gladbach, Martin Stranzl returns from injury and could start at centre-back. If Marco Reus does not recover from injury in time, Igor de Camargo could replace him up front.
As For Dortmund, Moritz Leitner could replace the injured Sven Bender in central midfield again while Kevin Großkreutz and Ivan Perisic will compete for the spot on the left wing.

- An investment in a lack of goals may seem a surprise, but these are two teams who have accounted for 13 clean sheets between them this campaign including two each in the past fortnight. BVB top-scorer Robert Lewandowski has already netted nine league goals, but has yet to score a goal away from Signal Iduna Park this term.
