Manchester United have struggled to wrap up their Champions League group so far this season, and a defeat in Switzerland against FC Basel would unthinkably see the Premier League holders eliminated from the competition. BASEL vs MANCHESTER UNITED: MATCH PREVIEW- United needed a last gasp equaliser to force a 3-3 draw when Basel visited Old Trafford. Now the Swiss side need to win to go through to the knockout stages and if they can pull it off, United will be out.

- In the five Barclays Premier League games since the derby defeat to City, United have yet to concede a goal from outfield play - Demba Ba's disputed penalty for Newcastle being the only time the defence has been breached. The Reds have scored one goal in each of those five games and picked up four wins and a draw. . In the Premier League they have taken maximum points from Everton, Swansea and most recently Villa winning 1-0 on each occasion after taking a first half lead and keeping things tight.

- Basel have won seven games on the trot in the Swiss Super League and are clear of Lucerne at the top of the table. Basel have shown resolve and a fighting spirit to get back into qualification contention, and are a difficult team to beat at home. The Swiss champions came back from 2-0 down at Old Trafford in the corresponding fixture to lead 3-2, and only a last minute Ashley Young goal prevented the visitors from a famous victory.

- Javier Hernandez joined the injury list by sustaining ankle ligament damage on Saturday but Danny Welbeck is fit again and Dimitar Berbatov also has a chance of being ready in time. Tom Cleverley, Michael Owen and Anderson remain on the sidelines and influential midfielder Michael Carrick is suspended.

- As for the hosts, Benjamin Huggel has been struggling with injury for Basel while Marco Streller is an option alongside Alexander Frei if the hosts opt for a two-pronged attack. Basel manager Heiko Vogel is unlikely to make too many alterations to the side that beat Otelul Galati in the previous matchweek.

- Wayne Rooney started the season in devastating form, with nine goals in his first five games, but his only goals in 10 matches since then came against the Romanian minnows Otelul Galati. Anyway, United will start their best 11 on Wednesday and give an inspired effort that will make their fans forget about this season's disappointing group stage.
