Arc de Triomphe 2011: odds, betting preview and predictions (Sunday 2 October)

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one of the biggest races in the European calendar. Last year, The Prix was won by the brilliant Workforce and he is back to defend his crown on Sunday at Longchamp. Read our betting preview, highest odds, free bets and the best free predictions on the Internet.

Workforce @ 7.00 The 2010 winner has the 2011 Arc as his main aim once again this season and is being trained with that in mind by Sir Michael Stoute. He started his campaign this season with a comfortable win in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in Group 3 company. We saw Workforce run a good race when second in the Coral Eclipse recently behind So You Think, that was over 1m 2f which is clearly short of his best trip and many believe he could reverse that form over the extra Arc distance at Longchamp. He followed up that win in the Arc with a second place in the King George and Queen Elizabath Stakes at Ascot, he hung badly to his left that day which may have cost him the win. We last saw Workforce when he came in second behind Nathaniel in the King George Stakes at Ascot, he hung alarmingly that day which is a worry but most feel he would have won had he ran straight.

Nathaniel @ 11.00 Nathaniel is perhaps the most interesting of all the Arc De Triomphe Runners this season having been supplemented for the race following a brilliant season so far. Nathaniel will need to be supplemented if he is to take his place in the Arc as he hadn't even won his maiden with the entries closed for the Longchamp race. He won his maiden at Haydock back in April before running with credit behind Treasure Beach in the Chester Vase in May, that again turned out to be an excellent run but connections decided to swerve the Derby for a run at Ascot. His form has to be respected.

Bet Nathaniel @ 11.00 with

Sarafina @ 4.50 She has won two of her three starts so far this season and looks to be improving as we head towards the Arc. Sarafina was a top class horse last season and that culminated in a third place finish in the Arc behind Workforce and her form this year is better than ever three impressive wins to her name. Sarafina has been made the favourite for the Arc following the retirement of Pour Moi and that has been confirmed with her win in thw Prix Foy. The Foy is a key trial race for the Arc and although she had a troubled passage she did find enough to win.

Meandre @ 15.00 Meandre has proven himself to be one of the better three-year-old horses in France this season and Andre Fabre is now prepariing him for a tilt at the Arc at Longchamp. The three-year-old has won on three successive occasions this season with the most impressive coming at Longchamp in July when he won the Grand Prix De Paris in fine style to claim a nice Group 1 win. Meandre has form over the Arc course and distance with that win in the Grand Prix de Paris which is another plus, amongst his own age he looks to be one of the best but he will have to find somethign extra against the like of Workforce and Sarafina.

Galikova @ 8.50 The younger sister of the wondermare Goldikova has really made a name for herself in 2011 and following a number of impressive runs Galikova now looks likely to take her chance at Longchamp. Galikova has been particularly impressive in her last two starts with consecutive wins in the Prix Guillaume D'Ornano at Deauville and last time out in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp in Arc Trials day. she goes to Longchamp with every chance of being in the mix on Arc day, it maybe be a big ask for her to win but she looks a great each-way price.

So You Think @ 6.00 The former Australian superstar has had a brilliant first year in Europe and a win in the Arc could well be the icing on the cake. So You Think was a superstar in Australia before being moved to Europe at the start of the year, he has shown glimpses of brilliance when winning the Eclipse and the Irish Champion Stakes. Perhaps the best performance from So You Think this season came at Sandown when he won the Coral Eclipse back in July, he beat 2010 Arc winner Workforce into second place after a titanic tussle over the last furlong or two. There is no doubt that So You Think is full of class, the only doubt surrounds the trip as we are yet to see him run the 1m 4f trip in Europe.

Snow Fairy @ 15.00 She is also proven at Group One level, winning in top company on four occasions in the past, including twice over the Arc distance of 1m4f.
Other things that look to be in Snow Fairy’s favour are the weather forecast, as the lack of rain predicted at Longchamp will help the horse get her favoured quick ground. Furthermore, the shorter home straight at Longchamp could play to her advantage as she has struggled on longer straights in the past.

Reliable Man @ 11.00 Reliable Man has won four of his five starts with perhaps his most famous win to date coming back in June at Chantilly when he won the Group 1 Prix Du Jockey Club. Following on from his win the Prix du Jockey Club, reliable went into the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp as the warm favourite but he ran below his best to finish third behind Meandre and Seville. He is another major Arc contender from the classic generation.
